Texas

Hello fellow BYC members!!! I will be hatching some Cochins, Seramas, a few silkie/possible showgirls, and a Japanese mix in early July. Also in early August I will hatch some silver laced Wyandottes, of these I might only be able to keep one. I am located in San Antonio, Texas and I'm willing to drive a medium amout to meet you. If you are willing to drive here to pick them up or will meet me and I still have multiple left I will let you choose. Both will be available around November, the bantams will be around 4 months and the Wyandottes will be around 3 months. I am not posting this in the buy~sell~trade forums because this is beforehand and I am only willing to sell to someone in Texas I just need some homes set up for these guys. All of the roosters will be 15$ if I have to drive a substantial amount to meet you to cover gas, but I may give the last few away for free. Please pm me ASAP if you are interested.
Thank you and God bless
-Alicia

I live just a just south of San Antonio. Are you selling or just dont have room for them all? I might be able to take a few if you really need to find homes, but I am not really looking for more at this time. Also, I can easily meet you in somewhere in San Antonio or at your place if needed. Just PM me if you need me to pick up and rehome a few chickens.

ANTS!

Please...I need help from Texas people. I have ants in the run. So far it's just the run. I'm new to chickens...so I'm at a loss as how to fix this with the chickens around.

I've had the helpful advice to just feed in the morning and the ants should go away. Ha. Not in TX! I have food in a Grandpas Feeder in the coop, and so far it's safe, but I can't bring it in and out every day (heavy!). But there are black ants in the run. The chickens are only 9 weeks old (tomorrow...my precious babies!) and so don't spend all day in the run and seem to show no interest in eating the ants.

What can I spray around the run and coop? I can do it every day...I don't care about the work, I care only about my chickens and getting rid of ants!

You can try club soda. Just pour a 2 liter bottle of club soda into the ant bed, the carbonation replaces the oxygen and smothers the ants. Do this twice, to make sure you get the queen. If they come back, repeat process. I did this with my coop and run and it worked wonderfully. DO NOT spray with any chemical insecticide, as this will harm your birds. Wish you the best of luck.

Just want to add, if these are fire ants there is very likely more than 1 queen in the anthill.

Interesting ...mine don't roost at night either...they hang out on the limb during the day so they can look out. They huddle together on the ground at night though. I guess that will change when they get older. Not sure why they would huddle...maybe safety in numbers or mutual warmth.
Mine also. I was trying to think of how to get them into the roost area at night without having to go out and stuff them all in and close off the door.

Ok thank you I'm just not in the position to take any Roos here at my house at our ranch is where I have one and will take a Wyandotte If I am unable to re-home all of them and they start to crow I will probably use you as a back up. I wish I could keep Roos but I'm in a neighborhood and I'm pushing it with all my noisy hens

Thanks

MandiB, If they are black like you said, They are probably sugar ants or, if they are large black ants, they are carpenter ants. And, with these ants, there will most likely be more than one queen.

I knew fire ants had more than 1 queen, did not know that sugar and carpenter ants also had multiple queens. Thanks for the information.

Off topic question, I have been entertaining the idea of getting a rooster. I have read that a Jersey Giant would be good for predator protection, and also good for their personality towards people. I have 4 RIR's, an EE, an Americauna, a Barred Rock, and a Buff Orpington. Not really worried about cross breeding, just protecting my ladies. Any advice????

Does anyone know where I can get EE pullets?? Not Bantams, and about 4 months old. I am not setup for chicks. If there are some breeders around the Houston/Conroe area, that would be ideal.

I am in new Braunfels, and I have both smooth and frizzled EE. Pullets and Roos. About 8 that are 5 weeks and off heat. Not super close to you, but worth it if you want to drive down.

Used to have a EE rooster with a awesome personality, loved to be fed and was great to his girls. The poor Roo was a gutless coward however and ran at the first sign of trouble even if his ladies were danger he'd save his own skin. A EE is no Jersey Giant but I would think it would still be a hit or miss on getting a Roo like what you want. Be better off just building a outdoor pen if your having problems or whatnot or train a pup to be a LGD.
