Hello from Austin. Your chicks are cute. I hope you don't put water in the bucket and some soap to make sure the chicks cleaned themselves. Yesterday I changed the water and put a large container in, I though the chicks (2-3 mo) were old enough to take their chick waterer away. Five minutes later, I found one fell in and drowning himself. I took him out, put him in the sun but could not save him, maybe a Her.

2011 ......Yes I remembered that Hot year, my ranch got burned partially and they blocked everyone from entering, returning to their properties for awhile. We though all chickens were dead of hunger, thirst... but there was a lone man staying back and feed everyone horse, chicken daily.

Well, it's not all bad since that year my ex left me and I was kind of ... born again chicken.

David, we had a torrential downpour here for like.... twenty minutes? But not enough to get any in my rain gauge. Ugh.... I need to water the garden again so itll rain some more. ;)

The dog I had to put down right before Valentines day was a heeler. Had her nine years. She was my baby girl. Many memories...
I hear ya about the memories. We make clay pawprints of our animals when they die. I keep clay in the house just for that purpose. I like the terracotta kind the best, then after I "carve" their names into the disc and usually their birth/death dates, I put a hole in the top for a hanging ribbon and then bake it to harden it. Losing them still sucks but I like having those pawprints to look at.

Greetings from Azle. Anyone else from the area?
Welcome to BYC! You have some cute chicks! They have a shiny, golden color to them. They look nothing like my 3 EEs. That's the thing with EEs, you never know what your going to end up with, no matter what color they were when they started out. :)

Slow going on my chicken tractor because my 78 year old dad decided to give up the 5 bed 3 bath home (I've got 5 brothers) and move into a small 1 bed 1 bath house just 3 miles up the road from me. It will be good for him because he doesn't get around real well anymore but it's no small feat to sift through 40yrs of memories and belongings to whittle all that down to fit a tiny space. Well, I'm off to get some work done! Happy Monday folks and watch out for chicken math! Y'all are talking about MORE chickens and I'm still just attempting to get started. I'll never catch up! haha
Good luck with the downsizing! We had to do that a few years ago when my mom moved from a 3 bedroom to a 1 bedroom. Sad thing is, after all that work, she is since moved back into a 3 bedroom and had to buy new stuff!!!!

It came through here around 2:30 this morning. Lots of thunder, but only a trace of rain in the gage. :(

Yesterday I changed the water and put a large container in, I though the chicks (2-3 mo) were old enough to take their chick waterer away. Five minutes later, I found one fell in and drowning himself. I took him out, put him in the sun but could not save him, maybe a Her.
Sorry about your chickie Hung. :( You would think at that age they would be big enough.

2011??? Try last year for us.

Lisa, 2011 was a bad year for the whole state. Ranchers had ponds dry up to turn to dust. A lot of ranchers lost cattle and hay had to be brought in from other states. Wildfires were numerous all over. Had several not too far from me in Kennard and Groveton.

I am having a prescribed burn done on my property between now and end of May. They are cutting a twelve foot swath around my property line on my back 53 acres and will burn the understory to remove leaf litter and non native species of honeysuckle and sweet gum, just to name a couple!

It takes years for a property to recover from a wildfire. God used to do it naturally before man interfered!

Off my soapbox now.

How did my type get bold?

I know that some parts of the state still hasn't recovered from that drought. When we lived in Oklahoma, things got really bad there for a while (back in the '80's). Ken took his bulldozer and made a 'fire path' around our place. I wish we had the bulldozer now (do NOT tell him I said that). We just make sure the field is cut super short.

Ahhh Hung, I am sorry about the chick. I would have thought they would have been old enough too.

Did anyone go to the Brazos Valley Poultry Club Trade Day in Giddings??? Unfortunately I wasn't able to attend but a friend still got me a new pair of d'Anvers!!!

And is anyone else planning to attend the Lawn Show? It's a VERY small show... limited to 100 birds

No...I wish I had gone and sold half of my flock to free up coop space.

I had the department of health inspect me flock, but still haven't send my $35 application in to get my TAHC sales permit because I didn't think I would be going anywhere to sell poultry in the public any time in the near future. If I had my sales permit I could have taken 2-3 breeding trios of Black Copper Marans (two of the rooster won blue ribbons at Poultry shows this spring). I also could have put 2-3 breeding trios of Cream Legbars together too. I also have 6 week old juveniles from a few rare breeds that I need to start sorting and selling, and would have bought some White Marans if any were there at a good price. I will have to plan for next year because I didn't know the date on the event this year until about 10 days in advance. I tend save everything that is good quality over the winter and then in the spring when I start hatching again find that I am out of coop space and need to cut back further than I originally wanted to. The trade days would have been a great place to trade out my surplus and bring in some new projects.

Very glad that man took care of all the animals left behind during the evacuation. I think that is one of the hardest parts to deal with in emergency. How much to risk your family and yourself to save beloved animals during evacuations. I'd be one of the people being forced out, I could easily save the dogs and 4 of my cats, but the 2 outside cats, chickens and geese would not be so easy to remove in the tiny amount of time they give you.

I'd probably make my hubby drive my car with my kids and as many dogs as I could fit in there, (4) , load the remaining dogs and cats in in the cab of his truck and start throwing chickens and geese under his tonoe cover before driving out in it. Lol

Its better to ask for forgiveness then to ask for permission!!!! So just get them then say I am sorry I love you !!!
I already did that. Thats how our dog and cat population got so large. When I found Mittens (a black and white female) he told me NO! I brought her home anyway, she had just been thrown out of a moving truck right in front of me! It made me sick. So I brought this cat home that had no hair on her back legs, and broken teeth. For a year I took care of her, then her remaining teeth started falling out. So I asked the cat rescue to help me. She now lives with an older lady who was a vet, dang cat has a very spoiled life, lol. When I found Kairi freezing to death in my tree, I did it again. I bottle fed this kitten and had her tucked under my shirt for 3 days cause she was severely hypothermic and couldn't stay warm without help. Well I couldn't give up the cat after that kind of intensive care, so she is my baby and still searches for me every night for bed. She sleeps on top of my chest, my own personal heater.

I already had 3 female kittens from my outside cat Patches last litter and 1 female kitten with my 18 year old daughter from an older litter from Patches. (Patches is now spayed, thank the Lord, and so are all 4 of her daughters and Kairi). Then I rescued Sasha, 1 of our Siberian Huskies while he was overseas, he didn't say too much about that. Rascal he can't say anything about as I rescued him before we got married. (we have been best friends for 12 years, but didn't marry till 2 years ago for a lot of reasons). The Rott he can't complain about, he really wanted a Rott, so I rescued her and gave her to him,

so she is his. I also talked him into trapping/neutering 3 tomcats and releasing them back. I have been pushing his limits with my dog/cat rescues, and now I am doing chickens, geese, and soon to be ducks.
I have to watch my step, don't wanna really make him mad.
