Question...do silkies require any special care or can they live with other chickens. The lady I mentioned some time back finally send me an e-mail. She has chicks, silkie, polish and others for sale. I tried to get her to come to the thread but not so far. I sent her another e-mail this morning so hoping to hear back. Silkies are suppose to be good brooders so DH wants a couple if they are easy to take care of.

the main thing with silkies is that they are very docile birds and when put with more aggressive breeds like RIR's can get picked on and attacked but other then that slikies surprising are good with both heat and cold i wanted to get some but I'm at my coop space max as we speak

Well, i think it's official...we have two new layer hens. Sunday DH gathered all the eggs. When we went to do so Monday there were 14 eggs! We only had 12 layers and since it takes more than a day to make an egg the 2 girls have to be laying, So I did the math and figured the 2 new girls are really 26 wks old not 22 like I thought. Then yesterday DH observed the white hen leaving a nest and checked to find a shiny wet egg in it! The egg is an odd color...almost lavender it's very light tan but has a pinkish color to it. Nice big egg too!! I'll get a pic later of it.

well depending on the breed chickens can start laying at 20 weeks

The cat rescue group has a contract thing with 1 vet. It's like 45 minutes to an hour drive for me. But worth it. Also SpaySA will do feral cats for free, but no shot. I took 1 dog there (low cost spay thing) and did not like it. So I stick with the rescue group for cats.
Guess I need to check into that and see if there is a group near me. I only have one feral male around right now and he is older and can't get near him. He is trap wise too but at least it's not a female. The female showeed up last spring and gave us 5 kittens in our attic. Got her spayed and kept 4 of the kittens now grown and fixed...all black except for one tuxedo. 2 long hair and two short hair. DH is a sucker for kittens! Yeah and me too!

Where do you get cats spayed/neutered for that price??? It costs me $100 every female and $80 for males plus a rabies shot.

well most states have low cost spay and neuter programs and i have to say it has saved me a quite a pretty penny. here are a few links i use if you get you pets fixed at the apca they start in my area at $55 plus shots that come out to $65-$75 but if you are in the right area and have low income you can get free fixings with a $10 flea pill.

Magpiesing, here we have something called emancipet. It a mobile clinic that does spay and neuters for free and most shots for free, some low cost shots and they ask for a donation. Check them out and see if they go by anywhere you are.

Hmmm...we have RIR and PR in the adult group and SLW, Marans and leghorns up and coming. We have 4 bantams that do ok with the big girls they just stay out of their way. We can always change the living arrangements. It would be worth it to have a couple more good brooders.

I don't post much on here, but I do lurk and keep up with what's going on. I had to post today, though.....

I went outside this morning to check on some of the dogs out there and just happened to glance over at my little chicken tractor. What do I spy but a 2 foot long rat snake looking for an entrance to the tractor. So, I grabbed a stick and went to move it away when the snake turned toward me and slithered off between my feet!!!!! Needless to say, I shrieked like a little girl!!!!! This is my first snake/chicken encounter, and I knew it was only a matter of time, but still.....the adrenaline is still flowing high!

i would say that you should try put them together but keep a very close eye on them if you see blood when you try to integrate them get them out there fast

Dang, it might be time to sharpen a machete and keep it handy for the next encounter. no point in letting them hang around to menace the chickens.
