I thought so too. A rooster usually just cares about hen vs. rooster and breeds all hens. Screwball has a clear preference for the darker ladies. I'm sure that when the RIRs and BOs are ready he will change his mind. Or at least I hope so. Lol. I want as many fertile eggs as possible for hatching next spring.

What's a good Roo/hen ratio? Right now Screwball is my only confirmed Roo. I think I have 1 RIR Roo that is slow to mature. It's not crowing but looks to have the beginnings of saddle feathers. Right now I have 25 chickens. So I think I need a 2nd Roo to ensure fertility in my flock. What do you guys think?

possibly, what you can try is putting dark saddles on the light ladies. Maybe he will think its a new girl and go bonkers lol

OK, why is nobody joining in the dance?? This is Memorial Day Weekend. We should be remembering our Vets and celebrating the freedom they fought and died for!! They would want us to celebrate this and not be sad. They would want us to know that their sacrifice was for something worthwhile!! Let's not let bthem down!!

Thanks Ken! This vet appreciates the thought

if you do let me know how it goes

I will. But I am hoping Screwball either wakes up and notices the lighter hens are lovely ladies, or that RIR turns out to be a slow maturing rooster. I am pretty sure 1 rooster can't service 23/24 hens, as much as he would like too. Lol. So I'd prefer a 2 rooster flock to keep all the ladies safe, happy, and fertile.

I may be looking for a Rock, Orpington, or Austrlorp Roo in a few months if I don't have a 2nd Roo now. I'd like a Roo that is handle able and treats the ladies right, he don't have to be a pet, just not vicious.

OK!! I feel violated. I have been shaking things I didn't know I had, for the last 30 minutes, and they all hurt!! I love y'all, but I have to go and put some salve in places too personal to mention. So, I am going to go do that, and go to bed, try to recover.Goodnight and God Bless!!
