Okay... chicken math is taking hold... anybody have experience with Seramas? They're awesome looking tiny little things! Thinking about building a larger coop for my barred rocks and wanted some smaller girls for my tractor.

No experience..but I've been eyeing them as well....
There's a breeder south of Dallas but I don't have any experience with them.
Looks like they do a lot of bantams

I know they can't enjoy it, but even my "meanie", the top of the pecking order, will hold still while I check her vent and legs.
Paranoid of the creepy crawlies..haha

Someone said you an tell if a hen has been laying by her vent...I have 2 that are so close, I wonder if they're laying in the yard and hiding. Could I compare them to my laying hen? Is it obvious?
I honestly haven't checked since she started laying the weekend before last. Guess I'm behind lol

I don't know what to look for, but I can compare my 3 Easter Eggers' vents to my White Leghorn & Red Sex-Link (my two known layers) to see which one is giving us our baby blues. But really, it's only curiosity that causes me to entertain the idea of vent-checking. When they squat for me, they present their vents when I pet them down their back. Next time I do this, I'll just take a peekie-poo. Heh!

Hi,

I live in McKinney, TX. Can you tell me what the good areas of Austin where one can raise chickens? I would also like to get a pot-bellied pig and maybe some ducks,

Thanks for your help.

claudia

I live in Round Rock...well just outside the city limits, but still with a Round Rock mailing address... Several neighbors of ours have chickens and at least one (that we know of) has a pig. My sister-in-law lives in Austin (Avery Ranch area) and she has a pig as well. I don't know the best areas for raising poultry & pigs, but it's often best to be on the outskirts. That way there are less HOAs and less neighbors bothered by the sounds/smell/mess of barnyard animals. Good Luck!

I have been raising American Seramas for about three years now and have 32 chicks growing with more hatching any day....I would try to answer questions about them if I can.

How many time do you turn the eggs over in a24hr time lin

Some people say to turn them every 4 hours. Others say to do it only once or twice. It honestly just depends. When my grandmother used to turn the eggs, she'd just turn them whenever she passed them, about twice a day. I'm lucky that Mom bought me an egg turner for the incubator so I don't even have to think about it, which is great for me, haha!

We went to a church estate sale today (the church is being converted to a shelter for children who come over from Mexico looking for a safe place) and Mom and I went nuts!

I bought four big gallon jars for a quarter apiece! I'm going to looking into what it'll take to make my own apple cider vinegar. Mom got a big silk flower arrangement, a mirror, an old Canon AE-1 Program camera, and a bamboo mat to shade her birds.

We were both looking at this great big solid wood desk that I would have loved to use for painting my eggs, but it was $150 and we don't have a cleared out space for it. If we had more room in the garage, maybe I would have said okay, but it just would have ended up crammed somewhere if we bought it then and there. We need space for it.

Tomorrow Mom and I are going to the flea market in search of a glass cutter for cutting glass bottles. I'm also looking for some large wooden boxes to make a couple brooders for any chicks that may hatch in the coming weeks. I'm not counting my chicks before they hatch, but I'm still really hoping something comes from getting this incubator. :)
