Mavabird, we all understand on here. My husband and I were just fixing to build another run for my chickens. They are our "babies". I find myself telling people about my chickens having rugby moments over apples slices and worms. (until of course I catch them rolling their eyes) Most of my friends get tickled, but my child's spouse rolls his eyes. I love my chickens, and this I will not deny. lol

My chickens follow me around and like to be picked up and petted, I am pretty sure they know their names. rg's
Someone, can't remember who, told me chicken can remember up to 100 different people and see in color. I am positive they know their names. We call our head hen Big Bertha, cause she is truly the biggest one we have.

I think chickens have a 3 day attention span. I had an egg eating problem about a month ago that I solved in 3 days.

My husband and I found ourselves walking around the local Lowe's while on our anniversary get away. Yup. Took everything we had not to bring home some new cabinets! Not worth the risk tearing them up on the way home. Laredo is aloooong drive as it is.
I spent about 5 years in Laredo. I don't ever have the urge to go back.

Hi all. I've just ordered my first chicks. They should be here end of october 2015. I'm just outside Austin. I think the breeds I got are ok for the area.
1 black astralorp
2 buff orpington
2 easter Eggers
1 barred rock
1 rhode island red.
Looking forward to chatting with everyone and learning all I can.

I love my barred rocks. They are sweet and docile. I have black sex links which are a mix of rhode island red and barred rock. I know a guy in California who had orphingtons and the only time he had a problem was when they had a heat wave and the daily temps. were 110 degrees and higher. I think you have a good mix for a nice flock.(and I love it when you have the look of a mixed flock) The rest of my flock consists of cream legbars, speckled sussex, a sultan bantam, and a red laced wynadotte. I have 3 Olandsk dwarfs, and just ended up with 4 more mixed bantams from the kids in the feed store. I think there is another sultan, a english game bantam, a buff silkie and what appears to be a blue cochin. Maybe I should bar the kids from the back room in the feed store. They head back there everytime we go to see if there are any new chicks. This was suppose to be a 3- 6 chicken thing, but chicken math happened and is still ongoing. lol Thanks to all the people on here I nursed two sick chicks back to health, and learned how to hatch eggs. I have always gotten the best advice. As a still newbie to this I know I can count on the experience of all the people on here.

K wow you do have a flock lol. I'm hoping to avoid chicken math. I think if it gets really hot I'll put a fan in the coop and maybe try the wading pool method. I really wanted mixed so I could tell them apart :) I'm still working on coop plans and how I'm going to put everything together.
