Sadness looms over us today. My husband and I had to cull two of our young roosters. We are not sure if it was brain damage due to a possible fight with the other two larger roosters, or marek's, or something else, but out little silkie roo and our turken roo were put out of their misery today. They had a very hard time walking around, very shaky. No stiff legs sticking out to the side, but not able to stand firmly on their feet without loosing balance. They still got around the coop and ate and drank to the best of their ability, but they were loosing weight and I couldn't watch them suffer any more.
Sorry you had to go through that. Such is the world of keeping chickens. You can go through a lot of sad stuff. Over all keeping chickens is a positive experience.
One of my first hens has her 5th birthday Tuesday. I thought I was going to lose Blondie to nasty butt (only thing I know to call it). I was able to nurse her back to health. Epsom salts baths and antibiotic spay. Then a stupid fox gets my Princess. It's always something.Princess was a Rhode Island White and laid beautiful extra large eggs.
My only layers now are my two cream legbars who have been laying for a month now and they are laying tiny extra small eggs. Do they get bigger? Blue or not they are too small. 1.4 oz.
