Texas

Well I checked out the Blue Bonnet Classic show in College Station today. Not too enthused with how poultry shows are done, will check out a few others before making a decision if I want to try showing. At this point it is a no though. Did enjoy getting to see all the breeds up close and personal, but most of the ones I have been wanting weren't represented. Also found the Table Top Serama show to be interesting, so time to do more research into the breed.

RoosterCogburn7 - If I remember correctly you were looking into and debating between the Svart Hona and the Ayam Cemani, both breeds were represented at the show. There were two pairs of Cemani, big size difference between them, the smaller ones were possibly a bit young still. There was not much of a size difference between the larger pair and the Svart Honas. The larger pair were from a breeder in Kempner. I am going to try to contact the individual with the Svart Honas that is in Montgomery. The Svart Honas are supposed to lay more eggs.
I thought about them. After some research, it appears they don't lay many eggs. So, price per bird, to egg ratio makes them questionable. If I end up doing them, I agree the Svart Honas would be the better choice for egg laying capability. Though, honestly, I think could do better with some Silver Orpingtons.

I like the look of the all black bird, and I am curious if they taste any different. Still an expensive investment (yard ornament), so will have to wait for now.

You are probably right about the Orpingtons having a wider audience though. We are trying to pick a project breed to work with. May just go with the Barred Hollands, since I already have some.

I am trying to see what the market will be in Spring/Summer once I get my birds tested and get an NPIP license. At the moment it is Black Copper Marans, Blue/Slpash Americauanas and Chocolate/Mottled Orpingtons. If this works out I want to expand to Silver Opringtons. Don't get me wrong, I do agree with you that the all black chickens have a very alluring mystique.
