Texas

Okay, BYC, I need some help. My sister in law gave me a hen, that at first we thought had a dislocated hip. She got stuck between the house and the fence over there. Anyways, today we checked her out and she has a broken leg..

it seems to be broken at the knee. We have put a temporary splint on her leg. Should i leave her be and make sure it heals or what?

I think it was on this thread where I asked about how folks managed fly control. I did end up getting some of the super sticky FlySticks. Thought I'd report back - they work well. However, you know how they have this warning that they are so sticky that they can catch small birds, etc.?

Well, yeah...

O wow, I use those cheap strips that you have to twist apart to open. They catch flies like crazy. I put them in the duck pen and nobody flies in there so I haven't had a feather problem. I'm putting another fly trap up today. With all of the flies the first one caught and the sticky strips have gotten you would think flies would be extinct around here, lol. All this rain has not helped one bit with the flies

Do you know how old she is? If you don't want to put a lot of money into her by taking her to the Vet, I would just go with the splint and keep her confined. Be sure to post in this thread if you have not already https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

Hooray, third night out of the brooder and they went in the coop by themselves tonight. No more chasing them around to put them inside. I walked out and told them time for bed and my BO led the way. Not quiet 5 weeks old. Soon as they start roosting out comes the shavings and in with the PDZ. Coop only holds 4 girls and is 30" x 48" so instead of a poop board I'm going to just cover the floor with PDZ. Raining here again but they don't seem to even notice. Run is covered but some still blows in making mud puddles. Looks like they have boots on with their muddy feet.

Since this is Texas and I live in the Fort Worth area does anyone in my area know about wild mushrooms and chickens? With all this rain we have them popping up everywhere and I already caught one of my dogs eating them. My chicks are still in the brooder but I am noticing white fungus growing underneath the coop which is all muddy. Is there a non toxic way to rid of mushrooms and are they harmful to chickens? I know we need the rain but everything is growing out of control. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

While the vast majority of mushrooms that are found in North America are edible. Not very tasty but edible. It is always best to err on the side of caution. In other words, don't eat them or allow them to be eaten by your children, pets or animals. The best way to get rid of them is to use a hoe and just rake them out of the ground. This is best done before they fully open and spread their spores causing more mushrooms to grow. Right now it is almost impossible to stop their growth due to the high moisture content in the ground and a place like shady areas of the yard or under the chicken coop are some of their favorite growth areas. Just do your best to keep them "harvested" and disposed of and you should be o.k.

I haven't run into that problem, My girls prefer to scratch and pick for bugs/worms.

Is there anything you can put out for snakes?? Found a snake a little bit ago going after my little ducks (not the new babies), but it got away before I could kill it. It didn't get any of the ducks, but I don't need it coming back especially when my kids just go outside to play. It was a good 4 foot no rattles though, so I'm not sure what kind it was..
