new question, were getting mighty cold next week. my girls are 8 weeks old, i plan to close up the coop a bit, not every ventilation port of course. should i provide supplemental heat such as a heat lamp? my worry is that the ladies have never been in the cold before.

No supplemental heat. The chickens will acclimate to the cooler weather. Amazing, versatile creatures that they are. Provide a wind block but keep ventilation. Moisture is more a concern than cold.

8 weeks old - they should be fully feathered and can fluff up for insulation.

Are your perches wide enough they can keep their toes warm? At least 2" wide, but the Canadians talk about 4" wide for artic conditions. You know, below freezing for us.

Coyotes, raccoons, ringtailed cats, and minks, foxes as well as the common house cat! are all common predators in the hill country of Central Texas.
You don't need to supply supplemental heat for your birds, they will acclimate to the colder weather.

My biggest predator is my own dogs! Fortunately I keep them confined to their own yard. That being said, in the country most folks don’t seem to confine their animals so that is something to look out for.

It is a standoff now. As soon as they are in the run it probably be game on. The foxes have already been in the barn trying to find a way in. They are winning with my neighbor.
