gotta be one of the best birthday presents regardless... I just hope the postal service wasn't too mean to the eggs

Secretly I know he's laughing cause I'm the one who gets to build a bunch of new coops

Indeed - this is quite true. My post was simply the table showing the SOP - and, in that, it states "blue eggs"....may have changed in the last while; but...

Technically, if you cross a blue egg layer with a blue egg layer, they should lay only blue eggs. They will not lay eggs of a different colour than blue unless some other breed has been introduced along the way. In the case of blue green, green and olive - a brown egg gene most likely got in the mix somewhere along the lin

I have had birds from some of the well known lines lay olive & mint green eggs. We'll never know what they did to get that going if there was a diffferent breed added in. It just makes it more an uphill thing for those wanting to stick with the blue eggs and nice birds...
I have had hens from well known lines not lay a blue egg. The very 1st eggs I bought hatched out some clean faced birds, from a well known line. Some laid a nice blue and some a blue green. All hatched from pretty blue eggs. I won't get into names as that would just cause a mess and a huge fight I am sure. I bought eggs recently from a very well known line and they were so ugly I refused to use them. I was then told that some people breeding for show are not interested in egg color and that was why it didn't matter. So maybe that's where there can be a brown egger in the mix if someone has used it get something in the look over the egg color. And what is a true blue to one is not to another. And the what is an EE vs an Ameraucana thing is a mess too. I won't even start on the EE vs Ameraucana thing as it'd probably get the thread shut down.

Hope everyone getting chicks and eggs from wherever are just happy with what they get :) They are all cute and lots of fun to have around!

Is any one going to Beaumont for the South Texas State Fair next month? Poultry judging is on Sat. the 23rd.
Hadn't even heard of it...I'll have to check it out. Beaumont's not that far from a few of our kids, so it'd be great to do a hit at the fair then dinner with the kids.

I see they come in blue, is that the gene that dilutes or the self blue gene? In other words, can breeding two blues will you get a splash and blacks or will you always get only blues?

Blue x blue = blue, black and splash. Last year when I had a blue roo with blue hens I hatched mostly blue chicks.

Just shout if you need some extra hands. Not only is my husband around; but, we had a (unexpected to me) house guest arrive yesterday that I am more than happy to put to work. Already have them doing the rock base for my new coops as well as the rock firepit. Gotta find something to do with all this rock around here....might as well make them earn their keep, eh?
