Yup, My chicks are about 3 weeks now and seem to be getting bored in the brooder....I am in San Antonio, so the days are pretty sunny and warm. They spend the warmer part of the day in the coop and seem to love it. They spend a lot of time exploring, pecking and scratching, flapping their wings and taking dust baths.

Hey TIA,
welcome-byc.gif
and the Texas thread! What breeds are you looking for? They must have picked some doozies. lol There are lots of great folks on here that have some nice birds and some probably close to you. Check out the BYC Members Map https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/740342/interactive-byc-map Good luck!
Thanks!

I'm in College Station, which isn't far from Ideal. Since I first posted, I've talked with our local feed store, who said they can order anything I want from Ideal (no minimum order required)... whoop!

We're going to be placing our order within the next week -- hoping they'll be able to get us what we want (despite their site saying they are out of everything!).

What kind of feeders do you all use in your brooder? I have one of the round 8 hole feeders that u can attach a jar to the top.

I just put the container on today as they have been eating just the feeder full about twice a day...its been about 4 hours since i put a full container on and it has been conpletely emptied...mostly due to scratching as you cant even see the bedding around the feeder for all the food! Is this the wrong approach? Should i get the longer style? Probably 2 lbs of feed under their feet and im debating whether to refill or to let me eat what they spilled...

I took a empty protein drink mix plastic container and drilled several 7/8" holes around the bas about an inch or so up. I'm fixin to do another with 1" holes two to two half inches up since they are getting bigger. The only Feed I have lost is that that I have spilt myself. Lol

Hello everyone in Texas!!!
I am new with chickens and enjoying every minute of it. Currently I have 9 10 months hens and as they say in BYC "chicken math" is working perfectly fine with me, ordered more chicks for Spring and cannot wait to get them. I am so glad to know that there are so many chicken lovers around in Texas.

Welcome to the Texas thread. I really like your coop set-up. Hope to hear more regarding your new chicks.

Anyone else having insanely high winds?

It's supposed to be gusting 50 MPH here.. more like constant winds.. the horses lost their shed (and then had to go over to check it out.. idiots that they are...) so I moved them out to the front pasture. The hoop coops will be fine.. but may lose some tarps.

This wind is just nuts.. and they are calling for it to continue all night and into tomorrow..

we are under a wind advisory in New waverly (walker county) as well...not lookin forward to seeing what the yard looks like when i get home...being in open pasture we get all kindas of goodies. in January when the wind was carzy i found a 6 foot peice of roofing tin in my yard from who knows where.

My coup is getting moved over to my run today! or atleast is supposed to be! im soooo ready to get my hands dirty and converting the old shed! the babies is growing fast and they need their home ready!

as far as bedding within the coup im planning on just putting down some of the same type of shavings that i use in their brooder...would this also work for nesting material or should i go a diff route with that?
