Grrr. My sister in law says that her kids got pink eye from my chickens. Could they have got pink eye from them and have symptoms within two days? Or is this yet another of her attempts to make me look like a crummy person?
I told her that if they did give them pinkeye, it was because she doesn't make her kids wash their hands after anything (yes that includes going to bathroom, handwashing only happens if she can see dirt on their hands).
Ha! Yay! Welcome! Another North Houston Peep!Hey all!
Good news; DH and I just rented a house on 1 acre in Conroe!
I have never had chickens, but am excited to get some once we are settled. Any people in Conroe out there? Where do you get your chicks?
Conjunctivitis aka Pink Eye, is an inflammation and/or infection of the inside of the eyelids. It can be caused by irritants, bacteria, or viruses. What is normally termed "Pink Eye" is often viral in nature but many doctors term everything Pink Eye since cultures are usually not taken and it is easier for lay people to understand the term Pink Eye.. If they have bacterial or viral conjuctivitis vs something like allergic conjunctivitis, they likely rubbed their eyes with unwashed hands. It would be very difficult to pinpoint if they obtained a virus or bacteria from the chickens without cultures being taken from the children and the chickens. Something tells me that you probably aren't going to win any points trying to educate her on Pink Eye. Hopefully you can let it roll off your back like water off a duck.
Pneumonia and strep? Children don't just catch pneumonia like they catch a cold or even Pink Eye. I'm already thinking that there is some other issues going on that have caused that child/ren to have some more compromised immune systems than usual. Thanks for that information. I just found it odd that since we have had chickens for 5 years and all of my nieces and nephews (and random kids) have been around them, that her two are the first ones to get pink eye from my flock... At any rate, at least she took the kids to the doctor. Turned out one of them had pneumonia and the other had strep. Which guess that means I need to watch out for everyone who lives in my house. Hopefully our handwashing will prevent us from getting strep or pink eye from them. Lol
