Very sorry to hear about your chicken. BUT, just want to say...Please, don't ever ever say that. 15 years ago I was laying in bed thinking the same thing. I thought things were going bad and what else could go wrong. I got a call at 2:15 that night that my 17 year old son had been in a tragic car wreck and had a traumatic brain injury. My whole world changed in a instant. He died 10 years later from complications. I had it made in the shade and didn't realize it.
I'm sure they didn't mean to hurt them. Go easy on em Pop.

Sorry I went there....I just needed to say that out loud. I feel better now

I'm so sorry for your loss. It is hard to keep things in perspective at times and we all need occasional reminders. Especially when the kids are home from school for the week and you have run out of arts and crafts projects on day one.

i think it just deals with location.. you know.. supply and demand
since straw is usually used in barns and stalls.. and no one around here bothers with much of a shelter at all.. they don't bother with bedding. Our winters are pretty much non existent.. and the livestock stays out in all kinds of weather.. the most the average person around here has as a "barn" is a three sided shed with a roof... and even at that it's rare that anything other than a dairy goat or a horse will even think to use it (dairy goats can be pretty "prissy" about getting their feet wet

I know the meat goats and cattle don't bother with shelters.. and that's what most of the ranchers have. There are a few of us with dairy goats .. so we have to bed down with hay or wood shavings. Heck.. my emus won't even use a shelter!

The local stables (what few there are) all use the sawdust pellets or wood shavings for the horses.. but most of that also has to be supplied by the owner of the horse.. and not included with the stable fees...

Up North (Northern States) it's common practice to have a four sided barn / stable for your horse.. so you HAVE to have some sort of bedding.. and there are a lot more dairy cows.. since the winters are harsh compared to here they have the demand for straw
It may also be a crop issue.. I know people with horses here will pay to have quality hay shipped in since most of the coastal and alfalfa here in Texas died out with the drought a few years back.. but I don't know of any who would demand to have straw shipped in when wood pellets and shavings are available.

Well, came home to find my little keet that I was worried about dead in his corner. Poor little fella. He's out in Boot Hill, now. My husband won't let me feed them to the dogs.

But, in good news, all the others look healthy and good to go - and, this is my only loss out of all the chicks and keets and rabbits I've had, so it's not unexpected. I'd almost say I was due a loss, you know?

And, in construction news - the Hotel & Bathhouse (the first building in Landstown) is coming along. Construction should be complete in another couple days. He astounds me with how fast he works...

This is where he got his idea for this building:

Little Wing - I'm very sorry to hear about your loss.

Quote: More expensive than hay?.. probably why they don't bother with here locally then.. I know people have a fit every time the cost of grain goes up.. I can imagine what they would say if they were told that straw.. a bed.. for their critter was gonna cost more than it's food!

I can get pretty much any kind of grain I want.. it always amazes me when I ask Dwayne if he can get ____ .. and he says "sure.. how much do you want?"

Quote:
Lol.. yeah.. i just planted some grass seed the other day.. asked Dwayne for some old hay to use as a cover while it sprouts.. he told me I didn't want that.. I would end up with all kinds of weeds.. my reply "hey.. I'll take what I can get so long as it's GREEN!"
I love to look at something growing.. even if it's a weed.. better than bare dirt that I get to wave goodbye to when we have high winds or a heavy downpour!.. yeah.. I'm not a fan of erosion....
