For the hard water you don't have to resort to the calcium remover chemicals. You can just soak it in pure white vinegar and it will dissolve it right off. In my experience at least, it works way better than any of the hard water remover chemicals I have tried. How long to soak depends on how much has caked up on it. I have to do all my water dishes every few months to clean off the icky hard crust. A 15 minute soak and wipe and rinse and they are good as new, no more crust.I used misters a couple of years ago.. with the hard well water they were clogged within a month so I had to soak them in a calcium remover.. after dealing with that headache I resorted to just spraying the birds down when I would go check on them.. last summer I had the birds in coops and thought they would roast in there.. but we oriented them so they face South where we have a pretty constant breeze during the summer.. Didn't lose a single chicken until there was a fire nearby and the smoke was so thick you couldn't breathe without coughing..
They loved the misters when they were working properly.. I think the temperature under the misters was a good 10 to 15 degrees cooler (if not a bit more)
