Texas

Our ancestors sat in a rocker on the porch on the East side of the house in the heat of the day. I think the chickens they had were more suited for the heat. Now days everyone has fat large fowl feathered legged silky headed puff balls that have a hard time down South. Myself included. Well no silky headed puff balls yet but I'm sure the day will come.

Not me! We went for nearly extinct birds - Javas. All-purpose chickens for eggs and meat - meant to be a farm/homestead bird.

Not sure what I'll do this summer (first-timer here) but think I'll put a fan in their pen and if they're smart enough to stand in front of it, then I'll leave it.

Unclear how a mister would work on a bird who's totally covered in feathers. Not saying it doesn't work, just don't understand it yet.

hey my birds did fine last summer! i didnt do anything extra to keep then cool! they all freeranged in the yard and were fine... i didnt have a coop for them built yet only a hutch they had when they were growing out... they stayed in the shade and waded in the water i did have weeds thigh high at the time as well... now the weeds are gone and they have coops/pens to live in and be sheltered from the rain...
i cant wait for the summer this year so i can see my new kids run the yard while the older flock are cooped up in the pens!!!
i made all my pens out of pallets! i only paid for nails and the chicken wire! oh and staples... not too bad if i do say so my self! they aint purdy but they git the job dunn!!!

Cockle-Dood, now you are in Juarez! I moved you back from Louisiana once. You sure get around

I actually started to put ceiling fans in the coops last summer, but then pictured one of them flying up into it and what a mess that would make. Still trying to figure out how...maybe a wire grill around them. hmmmm
You can get brackets that a box fan will clip onto the outside of a horse stall or sit on top of the wall angled in - the horses would be very sad without them.
