Setting up at the Alvarado Flea market tomorrow .
I'll have Salsa, vanilla, jam, jelly, totes, turkey eggs, frizzle chicks.
One of my friends had made tamales, and the other is bringing hatching eggs and all kinds of stuff. LOL
It should be fun. BTW I hardly ever get a notification from this thread, drives me crazy.

Outside San Antonio. Just starting out. 26 chicks coming in a couple weeks. We'll be keeping about 10 and sell/give the others away.
Buff orpingtons,australorps,EE,barred rocks and RIR.

When you get ready to sell, look me up :) north side of SA, in new braunfels :) I am in the market for EE, BR and RIR to add into my mutt chickens.

They will be about May. I intentionally ordered a small number of pullets so that I would get some "males for warmth". Almost free food, just have to feed them out now.
i tried to do the intentional small order and they talked me into gettin the 25 bantys!!!! wat the frencg toast?!?!? lol i hope they send me some banty cornish!!!! cornish game hens anyone?!?!?!?!?!?

Awee our little airport. Spit and you miss the run way. Lmao! I would be happy to trade or buy off you :) I'm going to start deciding who stays/goes in my group. I have 12 lil mutt chicks, and plan on only keeping 3-4 of them. You are welcome to some if yiy would like. They are 8&5 weeks old.

NB airport is high tech xompared to the grass strip he flies out of down here :)

I have looked at the Bantam specials but I don't think I could stand another CRAZY bantam. I have 2, a black rosecomb pullet and a bantam rooster. The pullet is a nutcase. I also have 12 large fowl and 19 chicks. I just finished the grow out pen for the chicks, they have a few weeks before they will occupy it.

I'll have heritage eggs this spring.. not planning on hatching out any this year.. unless my husband tells me otherwise!

It's more like "which tastes better.. heritage or broad breasted"
Of the heritage breeds some people SWEAR that bourbon reds and midget whites taste the best... personally I cant tell the difference between the breeds of heritage as far as taste goes. I think that's more dependent on what the breeder is feeding them

But between broad breasted and heritage I prefer the heritage hands down. Even my husband has remarked that he never knew turkey could taste this good.

The last date I would get heritage poults in time for thanksgiving would be April or May... they grow slower than the broad breasted and don't have the giant breast on them that the broad breasted do. BUT they can breed naturally without any issues.. the broad breasted have to be artificially inseminated in order to get fertile eggs..
The broad breasted are also prone to the same leg issues as cornish cross chickens.. so most people don't try to keep them from year to year since they just get too heavy

broad breasted whites and broad breasted bronze bronze (not to be confused with heritage bronze) are faster growing (again much like a cornish cross) so there's a lot less time from egg to freezer. For a broad breasted you just let them grow until you have the size bird you want for the table.. some people only want a 12 pounder.. others want a 26 pound bird.. I think the heaviest I have heard of was somewhere around 48 pounds and had to be cut up and cooked in sections.

even if you went with a broad breasted bird it would taste better being a home raised bird than one from the grocery store since it would have had a better life.. better feed and not pumped full of chemicals at the processing plant.

Lol mine got close to fifty pounds I had to cut him up too, I got 27 pounds of de boned meat from him

Gettin eggs shipped on monday!!! Yea buddy!!!! Wow we gunna have a yard full of chickens! But, most will be soldor hit the freezer after they grow out... only keepin one maybe two roos from each breed im getting for breeding porpuses!
Its all commin together now!
