oh OUCH!.. I have had more than my fair share of broken bones.. and it makes it all that much worse when you can't do the things you are so used to doing on a daily basis. At least he will be in better shape by the time he comes home.. but it's still no fun when you have to hobble around on crutches and have your mobility hindered like that

My dad has been in the hospital recovering from a car wreck, which is tough for anybody but especially when you're 87. I just sent him a copy of that picture, and told him I know he's a tough old bird, too!! I know he'll laugh like crazy when he sees that!

Beautiful chicks. What is a Java? Never heard of that.
Javas are a rare breed that is a dual-purpose (meat and eggs) breed that was considered the finest table fowl in the 1800s and is an excellent homestead bird. They are large birds, good foragers, and do go broody. The APA recognizes Black and Mottled Javas in the SOP, however there are also a few Auburn, White, and Silver Javas that are being worked on (these are even rarer than Blacks and Mottleds). There is also a breeder that has been working on Bantam Javas, however I have not seen a photo of these to see how they turned out.

The Javas that come from the feed store will be probably be production Javas - it is highly unlikely that they will have been bred to be Standard Bred aka Heritage Javas that are true to type and function according to the SOP.

However, unless you are a stickler for production vs standard bred fowl, and you aren't going to be showing/breeding, then production Javas will likely fit the bill just fine for some nice backyard birds.

If you want to learn more you can check out Java Breeders of America . We also have an email list serv group and a Facebook chat group.

At the very bottom of the page is a bar that says mobile/desktop click on mobile. In the text box that says reply has three buttons one is a B one looks like a chain link and the looks like a mountain and a sun in a box-that is the one you push to upload pics.
I have a iPhone 4 and I don't see how to add pics what button do you push? I'm sorry not that technically advanced.

If anyone is in bryan/C.S. area, come out to bryan expo center and watch the cowboy mounted shooting competition. Men and women shoot 45 caliber revolvers, pistols, and shotguns off cantering horse back. Its a lot of fun!
