Texas

one observation about the city people is that they also let their kids run loose (ATVs are apparently toys) and we probably have as much shotgun action out here as Sarge has in his hood.
Yep that is also true here. We had some city folks drag racing up and down the dirt road side by side. I called the Sheriff. Then while here he saw some kids speeding down the dirt road on an ATV and told them to go home and not ride on county roads again, ATV are only allowed off road.

I lost my white and black EE pullet this morning

What happened?

I like to give every dog the benefit of doubt ONCE... mainly because we do get so many that are dropped or lost..and I really don't want to shoot someone's pet.. so normally when I find a dog i try to see if it has a collar or tags.. if I can catch them I take them to the vet to check for microchips.. however .. when a dog has crossed the line (which would be chasing after any of my animals or showing any signs of aggression..) then all bets are off.
I have been able to reunite missing pets with their owners since we have lived here.. so in that respect I think I may have done the right thing by not shooting an innocent dog
The problem in this case though is that the owners KNOW their dogs are a problem and just don't give a darn.. it's not someone's beloved pet that got scared during fireworks or a thunderstorm and bolted out an open door.. these are dogs that live locally and come here to kill for "fun".. I don't blame the dogs because they don't know what they are doing is wrong.. I blame their poor excuse of an "owner"

Like the guy at the feed store told me.. i have been far kinder than anyone else he knows when faced with the same circumstances.

. I would have hoped that someone would approach the dog first and shoo them off before shooting.

Um..yeah - no way in hades are you going to get me to approach a large, unknown dog. Particularly one running toward my chickens/dogs. I learned a long, long time ago to never get between an canine and something it's going after. That way lies trips to the ER. Nope - sorry, but I'm going to be one of the ones shooting first and worrying about it later.

BTW - I live on two acres. I don't consider myself in the country. I do consider myself on a residential estate with no HoA which allows me significantly more wiggle room about what I can and cannot have on my property.

i'm what you would call a bit... weird...

I have 0 problems getting between dogs and what they are after.. even aggressive dogs

and especially when they are on my territory....

if I go onto a dog's home turf and they bite me.. then fine.. I was on their property.. but when they venture onto mine.. all bets are off... been there and done it.. and yes.. I have taken a bite and I have a really bad habit of not backing down.. but then again i was raised around guard dogs and BIG dogs with aggression issues.. I've worked as a vet tech, groomer and kennel manager.. and my mother used to do wildlife rescue.. so I have been around all kinds of critters.. and not all were happy campers

Totally with you. Too bad you can't just shoot the lousy owners.

Quote: that would be a dream come true.. but unfortunately it's frowned upon by polite society.. so instead we allow them to breed and create more of their kind... *sighs*

hey.. I know I'm a terrible person.. but at least I enrolled in the spay and neuter program as soon as they would let me.. lord knows they don't need any more like me running around! One of me is MORE than enough!
