Texas

Welcome to the Texas thread!!!! Just wanted to say good morning to everybody hope y'all are staying warm!!

I was stupid this last weekend and planted one of my prostrate rosemary plants outside....it was on a friend's pet's grave. Since rosemary is a plant of "remembrance", I thought it would be apropos. I'm just hoping the frost last night was light enough that it won't damage the young plant...

The Girls, The Rascals and the rabbits wanted nothing to do with coming down out of their coops/hutches this morning. It was so funny. We opened up The Rascals' coop and you should have heard the ruckus they raised. You'd have thought we tossed cold water on a sleeping teenager.

I think I'm about a 5 hour drive from you... that's a heck of a drive to learn to vent sex!
i drive a Yaris...and drive 2 hrs one way to work...building my stamina up! maybe ill catch ya when you get some chicks going! what kinda tools are necessary to do vent sexing, or are you physically 'seeing' what they are?

very very interesting! ima start looking into that! would love to be able to check my chickies when im picking out names!

BTW, crisis was averted with my little guys in the brooder that the bulb went out on. all 6 are doing just fine.

Side note...is there a way to see about how old chicks would be? when i got this batch they told me they were about 10 days old making them about 3 weeks old now and they seem younger than that to my eyes. my first batch, BA's, BR's, and EE's were much bigger at that age than these guys (polish and SLW's). Ill try to post some pics this evening to try and get a better idea...its brooder cleaning day so they will all be getting handled today!

anyone have any older pullets/young laying hens they are looking for homes for south of dfw? Anywhere from Ennis, Alvarado, Waxahachie, Red Oak, DeSoto, Lancaster, Cedar Hill, Hutchins, Duncanville, Grand Prairie, Arlington, Dallas areas? I need two or three 4 months old or older to put in with my lil hen and roo. They are 4 months old and I don't want my hen getting too much love from the rooster when they hit age for laying and making lil ones. I know that adding two or three more still isn't enough for him, but I have baby chicks on the way that will be in with them eventually, just they won't be much entertainment for the roo till they are the old enough, and that leaves only one mature hen =/

I just found someone with a few two month olds. Gonna jump on it, especially since a few of them are pure bred ameraucana! I want to get the silver laced wyandotte she has for sure, but should I get one ameraucana with her, or two ameraucana or one ameraucana and a buff orp? Oh the decisions! They aren't too far behind the fav's so hopefully they will do ok. They will be put out there in a large dog crate to be introduced for a while~ So excited!

i dont think you can mess up with any combination! from what ive read, no experience yet

, all 3 of those are really good mixed flock birds. seems like whenever you hear about one, the other is in the same sentance....the only one i dont have from that list are the orps...only because im not looking for a broody just yet, but they are on the list! along with some NN's

when my husband gets back from Afghanistan I may have to get him to take a video of the emu... especially of the emu hugs

This is Kevin; she lives at the Bronx Zoo and is part of the tractable animals collection. As you can see, she loves to give hugs! (That is her "mommy" Kathleen hugging her)

I adore Kevin (Yes, named from the movie "Up") and wish I could babysit her. She kept trying to take my blue/green/yellow scarf because it was pretty. Even after I hid it in my coat sleeve she saw where I put it, and kept trying to find it to play with it. I really, really wish I could have an Emu but I'd have to be somewhere stable first to know that I could care for her during her lifetime. Also, she is incredibly soft and fluffy.
