Rained all night long but we need it

"And you wondered why your chickens weren't laying"
Poor dears....probably clucking away wondering what this long legged huge thing is playing near them. My ducks look at our great dane/lab mix like that when she gently investigates the pool while they are swimming.

He asked me to move the bunny cage further from the brooding pen...

I wonder....is that where the concept for the easter bunny who hands out chicken eggs came from?

Aaaand, in more news, my tiny little six week old roo started crowing today, but it's so funny and squeaky. Cute little guy
I wonder if mine might start trying to crow soon if they are roosters? The chicks are 5 weeks old now. They ended up with rose combs out of a BR roo and RIR hen. This is only my second season with baby chicks so I can't remember when they normally start to try crowing. I can't wait to find out who is a roo and who is a hen out of the three.

Freeze warning

....

In APRIL

....

In TEXAS

....Hell truly is freezing over.

Thankfully, for me and those south of me....it is not going too far south. But....still....what the heck?
At least it isn't snowing in April like it did a couple of years ago. I lived in Midway when it did that. That was a shock to walk outside and find it snowing in mid-April. Gotta love Texas weather it does things I think just to confuse the meteorologists.

We got teased by rain here, nothing worth noting. But we def got the temp drop!

And when i got home i found......

My first farm egg since i was a little kid!!
Littlewing/sarge...the eggs is an off cream color, that the yokie you think? Mama-red will be lauong brown, right?

Congrats!! Farm eggs are the best. I found out almost 2 years ago now that I am allergic to eggs. Unfortunetely I found out the hard way. When I started raising chickens I braved it and tried their eggs to see if maybe I could eat those. Amazingly most of the time I eat my chickens eggs my allergy hardly acts up aside from a bit of an upset stomach if anything at all. I eat store bought eggs though, I start wheezing, it induces an asthma attack, and I get really sick. It is amazing the difference in the reaction. Due to stuff like that I have become a big fan of local homegrown farm fresh goods. Tells me that other things must be going into our mass produced food than just the plain good stuff we all give our livestock and poultry.

Isn't it amazing how they worm their way into our hearts?

They really do. Instead of photos of children I have photos of all my animals. Most people are hey you want to see a picture of my child? Where as I am hey you wanna see pictures of my chickens, ducks, cats, and dogs.

I probably do go a bit camera happy on the animals but they are so cute.

Speaking of cute and funny animal moments......
I took this earlier today. This mama squirrel was running all over my grandmother-in-laws porch grabbing her peat moss out of the pots and other stuff to make her nest. I pulled up after coming back from shopping to see this event taking place. She was trying to use it to make her nest in. She will have to be relocated because the flags are coming down now after I showed them to my grandmother-inlaw.She said as cute as it was the flag had to come down.

Here comes the thunderstorms...I was hearing thunder outside so I checked the radar. The system seems to be moving North a bit. Hope everyone is nice dry and warm tonight.
It looks like our heavy rain may be on it's way in the wee hours of the morning.

Ok, so this might sound like a stupid question.....what can I feed chicks? I mean at what age can they eat different things? So far I'm giving them the start and grow chick feed, some store bought grit is mixed in with their feed at the proper ratio from what the bag said, some dried meal worms (they fight over these). I tried to give them some mashed up strawberries, but they weren't touching it.....it just sat there for an hour or so. Not sure if it's because I mashed them up and they think I'm crazy since they've already eaten the "good stuff" or what. The temps here in DFW dropped drastically yesterday so I'm not letting them forage yet until the temps come back up. Any ideas on what baby chicks like and what's "appropriate" to feed them at less than a week old?

I've found that they don't care for mashed up stuff as much as they do diced/cubed. And, some don't like certain foods while others go crazy for it. My Girls, for example, love blueberries. My Rascals, on the other hand, will ignore them until eternity.

As for what they like, keep experimenting. You'll hit on their favorites soon enough. Try bananas, btw. I serve them diced up to my brooder batch and they go nuts for it. I mix it in cubed for the rest of the flock and it's been a universal favourite. There's a list on here for good treats for chickens: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/chicken-treat-chart-the-best-treats-for-backyard-chickens

Alot of people will say that you dont need to feed them much more of anything until they get a little older....BUT....i would feed mine boiled egg when they were that young, and they really liked steamed corn and some yogurt that i had given them as well. once they got to about 3-4 weeks old i would give them carrot peels and some cucumber! they also got left over baby spinach from a salad we made and that was a hit as well!

the fruit has such a strong flavor and maybe thats why they didnt mess with it much, looking back at what i just listed seems more bland style treats! give it a shot and let me know what happens!
