Texas

I love that there are just so many BYCers in Texas. I'm pretty new here, but we've had chickens and ducks for a couple years. I'm from Harlingen, Texas (so far, I haven't seen anyone from all the way down here).

Between college and finding a job, I've been a bit of a farmhand and just spend loads of time around my babies.

Gracie, our pretty little mutt hen, has just hatched a couple eggs. Our first ever hatch ever. I'm glad to know, however, that there are so many Texans enjoying the wonderful world of chicken-raising.

welcome to BYC!! What breeds and how many do you have? Also, we lllooovvveee pics. Just sayin.

did she stay when you put her back? Mine smelled like death when she was broody
Hi PSJ! I put her down by the coop and she went in and sat down. I am so glad you said that about the smell. I knew their poop would smell but didn't realize it carried over to them. I went to church tonight and could still smell it on me.

I think tomorrow will be interesting. If she wants out again, I think I will let her roam around in the outer pen and not let her free range. The thing is she didn't try to free range. She went and hid behind my Rosemary bush.

So I can never keep up with how active this thread is. But, I love coming here and talking with other Texan BYC'ers. Our girls are getting big at 4 weeks old. They are now in their coop, but with this wacky weather we have to consantly turn on extra heat lamps/turn them off/turn them on/turn them off. It's crazy! Anyhow, they were getting time in the temporary run we built and free range time. Now my DH has built a little bit of the permanent run, but still has a lot more to go. We wanted it to looknice since we're in the suburbs and there are houses on all sides of us. The inside and outside still have work that needs to be done. Once the inside is finished this weekend then we'll put in the deep litter shavings or sand. I haven't decided which to use yet. I hear great things about both for different reasons they're both great. P.s. I cleaned the coop after the second picture was taken. It was cleaning day.

Looks very nice! I got some babies in the brooder about that age as well!

Thank you! They outgrew their brooder at 3 weeks. I wasn't expecting them to grow so fast! However, it's a learning experience. They've been fine in their coop. We purchased two more heating lamps that are stronger than the one they had in the brooder. So now they have 3 in the coop. And we'll turn only 1 on when it's warm out, but last night turned all 3 on since we knew it would be cold today.

Does anyone else have chicken brain? I'm at home - doing stuff with the chickens, watching the chickens, showing my daughter how to care for the chickens, I'm at work - thinking about the chickens, and wondering what would be good for the chickens. I'm at a friends house - thinking about the chickens, talking about the chickens..... I feel like I have chicken brain! Loving it!
