I haven't had a coon sighting in a couple of weeks. 'knock on wood'. We shot and trapped a whole bunch. We baited using microwaved scrambled eggs. my DH used to have some for pets and that was their favorite treat.

btw, i would like to point out that bantam rooster wrapped in bacon and stuffed with jalapenos slow roasted over a mesquite fire, was a huge hit with my family. i didn't jalapeno mine, but it was very very tasty.

jajeanpierre sorry to hear about your coon problem. We are with you on the "live and let live" thing. Tho I do understand it is not always practical. We use alot of deterrents, we have 120+lb dogs and they mark the perimeter regularly so most of the larger predators go elsewhere. We don't have bear here, thank goodness. We free range guineas for the smaller stuff and ours are raised by our broodies so they sleep with the chickens. When they go off in the middle of the night the dogs take over. We have live traps available just in case, and a Ranch about 5mi away where they wont be bothering anyone. They dont have to live HERE!

Ok folks where do I look while In San Antonio today and tomorrow?? ok I got CL;•} What else is there???I Need a decent Cabinet Incubator !!

I don't know that I've seen any place just hanging out with their incubators. Other than the normal feed stores, we dot have a lot of options here for chicken stuff.

I don't think it is a raccoon or my dog would have been killed or at the best, really torn up. I can't imagine any trapped raccoon, even a just weaned baby, wouldn't make mince meat out of an 8 pound little dog. I thought opossum or maybe even baby skunks before they've developed scent, but I can't imagine skunk. Where was mama? If it was a skunk den I would think mama would leave some odor around even if she wasn't there--and the only reason that would be was because she had died somewhere else. And it sounded pretty big banging up against the walls. I think opossum. It huffed, too, and I think opossums and skunks make that huffing sound when they are scared.

The only damage whatever it is is doing is eating tomatoes and my cantaloupe, which isn't the end of the world. Makes my husband crazy, but I have more tomatoes (or I did) than I can eat so don't mind sharing.

I want to get a livestock guard dog when these Dachshunds are all gone. I've too many dogs--the four Dachshunds and a big putbull kind of mutt.

I asked the other zookeeper. She's also a wildlife rehabber and wildlife education person.

She said probably opossum, but no guarantees. She said to check the soil for foot prints next time.

we've had opossums.. biggest threat to eggs other than a skunk.. lol
opossums do huff and LOVE tomatoes (I've had several that I rehabbed). I would much rather have opossums around than a coon.. a opossum CAN go after chickens.. but they will usually go for veggies and eggs before messing with an adult bird.

Usually when the dogs manage to catch one they end up killing it.. normally a opossum won't defend itself.. instead it will open it's mouth.. huff and play dead (hence the term "playing opossum")

I've picked up adults that the dogs have been after.. never been bitten since they will play dead and wait until we leave them alone to "come back to life"

We had several in the house during feeding and rehab. one baby in particular had been wounded to the point she couldn't be released back into the wild.. so people were surprised to walk in and find a opossum asleep on the couch snuggled up with the cats.

We tried to rehab 3 baby opossums when I was a kid. Even fed them milk out of doll baby bottles. They were super cute until they got to be about the size of a large kitten. Then they started hissing at us and eating their own feces. Dad made us take them out in the woods and let them go.

I don't think they had rabies. They were riding on the mom's back (who was eating our cat food) when the dog scared the mom off. Babies fell off and my mom (super softy when it comes it animals of all kinds) scooped them up before the dog could get them. They lived in our extra glass enclosed shower for months. They were just wild animals that shouldn't have been living in our spare bathroom... They would hang upside down from our fingers though when they were little. It was pretty cute for awhile.

BTW, fowlmouthgirls, I think we got them pretty riled up over there... :)
