There is a big rumor going around that the green EE eggs are cholesterol free. I'm pretty sure that it's rubbish, but I have a dear friend who is a chemistry teacher who is convinced that this is true. I can't convince him otherwise.

Okay am I the only one that is 100% disgusted by the fact that NO Channel is paying tribute tonight? My son is finally of the age that I wanted him to fully understand what happened and nothing... I am still using my words to let him know why today is important. Pearl Harbor, and I am not discounting that at all, gets more coverage. Almost 3,000 people died on this day, people like you and me, just going to work to do the job that they do. Some were on a plane going home to see loved ones. That could have been any of us.

Sorry guys, today is just a bad day for me.

Hello everyone. I lost 23 chickens to a dog attack this past Saturday. It was horrible. My neighbor's dog got out of their yard, pushed my gate enough to get in and attacked my chickens. My bestfriend came home while the dog was attacking them. He killed 15 meat birds 3 bantam Cochin and 5 blue laced red wyandottes. He killed my two favorite foley blue laced red wyandottes. The police came and made a report and animal control came and took the dog. I was at work when it happened. I talked to the officer who was at my house and o course he told me to talk to my neighbor and work things out. I spoke with the owner and I was trying to tell her all I've lost. And she said she had some fines she had to pay because of her dog being taken to the pound.I was rrying to resolve the problem but she told me to talk to her husband but as far no one has made the attempt to contact me. One of my chickens was inthe alleyway when I got home and I saw them taking pictures. Ao I went to my backyard to call her. All I got from my neighbors was dirty looks. I don't want to take them to court, but what else can I do?

Realistically, probably not much. They'd probably only compensate you for replacement chick value. I'm saddened to hear of your and the other poster's losses!

Hi! Just wanted to introduce myself! We're starting a small backyard flock (probably of EE's) in October. I'm in the DFW area.

My first big question is does anyone know of any place that sells good quality coop kits? The ones online seem kind of shabby. Or does anyone in my area build them to suit!? B/c I'm hiring!

I have all of those kinds of nasty weeds! It's why I justified my tractor and 5' shredder. I just put it on cruise control and enjoy my beverage while music lulls me through headphones. Ok, not at all a fair comparison but I really got the tractor for FEL work and picked up the shredder used since I already had the tractor.

Or just put all the chickens in a mobile tractor. They'll clear off all vegetation and till in the byproduct from the weeding too!

Check Craigslist. There are some listed on there in different sizes and such. We built our own from plans we purchased for $20. We already had almost every tool necessary though. Every time I do a project I justify to myself the "savings" of doing it myself will cover the cost of whatever tool I want at the time. That's how we've ended up with all the saws, tools, etc.

We just got started this spring. In hindsight I kind of wish we'd have just bought one of the different used coops that pop up from time to time on CL. People on this forum talk about "chicken math" which is code for "chicken addiction". We thought we'd want to have 6-8 laying birds to provide eggs for our 4 person family. So that's the size coop we built. Now we've got 20, and will probably add more (broilers) from time to time to stock the freezer. If we'd gone with a used coop we could have learned, then built what we really need once we knew what we'd really want. If that makes sense.

No, my current coop isn't for sale. The in-laws have called dibs on it if we decide to go ahead and upgrade. ;-)

I recommend "The Small-Scale Poultry Flock" by Harvey Ussery. I've been reading it recently and it answers outstanding questions I'd had and has a ton of ideas I may try out in the future.

I have an 8N and 6' shredder myself. It has a pretty big turn radius and I can't use it in a lot of areas. That is why I invented the U.W.M.W.D.
