I watch a show called "Transporter", it is a reality show about people that transport different things. The show I caught was about racehorses, it was fascinating. I never knew all that stuff about their lungs and how quick they can get sick if not transported correctly.
Thoroughbreds have really delicate lungs. I think it is because they've been selected for speed over a distance of ground which favors a thin wall in the lungs. They are basically lungs on legs. I saw a dissection of a Thoroughbred and was shocked to find their lungs extend all the way back to about their hip bones. Virtually every Thoroughbred suffers from exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage, called "bleeding" in lay terms--some sooner, some later in their careers. They move so much air explosively through their lungs that the lung area at the back high up behind the saddle ruptures blood vessels. The thought is it is caused by the huge vacuum pressure created. Horses in full gallop don't use their diaphragm to breath--their breathing is dictated by their stride with their guts sloshing back and forth emptying and filling the lungs. Horses in North America are usually given a diuretic before a race to reduce blood pressure and blood volume to control EIPH. It works. The Europeans where Lasix is not allowed do the same thing by withdrawing water from horses the night before or longer and dehydrating them.

Like chickens, fresh air is the issue, not warmth.

I'm just worried that my Silkies' feathers are so open that they won't repel any water and will get chilled. They've really enjoyed the rain today. I've been getting soaked checking on them. They foraged in the drizzle, but ducked under their coop for the heavy rain. I'm about to go out and check on them again.

I have silkies. The babies under three months stay in a well ventilated coup. The grown adult birds I have had through three winters now. They live in a 10x20 dog run with a roof. All sides are open all year around. They have 50 gallon rain barrels that I made into tiki huts for them. As long as they have an area to get in that's dry to snuggle they are fine. My silkies and polish are just like all of my hardier chickens. They enjoy getting out in the light rain getting muddy and having fun.

How old were the ones you lost to chill?

I feel so guilty. I slept in...until 3:05 P.M.

My little fowl friends are fine, but oh, this is horrible! How am I ever going to get back on a normal sleep schedule?

Darn rain, it got me feeling lazy! Now the turkeys are looking at me with sad eyes for not entertaining them properly. There is nothing sadder than a sad turkey.

I am really enjoying just watching the rain through the window. I have not been to motivated to do much of anything besides surf. My husband said we should declare it a holiday today. Of course I had to agree. Lazy day/holiday/rainday........ whatever...... I will take it.

Nah, I can't go outside at night. I get freaked out by the creepy thing that crawls on top of the coop. It has claws that you can hear against the aluminum roof. 0_0

I was watching documentaries. I get really drawn into watching news shows and docs. Oh, and I was painting an egg....for a 21 year old, I live a very dull life. -_-,

Documentaries are what all the really awesome people are doing! Being a drunken bar fly is way over rated. I have been lurking on the mutt breed thread for a while and saw you had some
