Texas

My new brooder. So, here's my question. I am wanting to add the NNs in with these JGs and just let them run together and grow up together. They are a week apart. I got the JGs a week ago Friday, and the NNs this last Thursday. Right now I haven't put them together because I am afraid of the NNs trying to squeeze out of the 1 inch wire (had that happen before when they were really small). So in a few days when they are a little bigger, do you think they would all do well together? I plan on putting them in a run together until they are all closer to laying age and then separating everybody. Anybody with experience on that? There are 25 JGs and 17 in the NN batch so almost equal numbers. Thank you!

That's terrific! No having to bend over to access the chicks.

The ground is saturated and the grass is sloshy, so the chickens are hanging out on our back deck. It's now the poop deck.

Good afternoon!

Lauri / Jungle - I'm sorry about your little chickens. :(

Mandy - NICE brooder and I have neglected to mention I like your new avatar and the photo above, too.

Rachael - The cast iron will last a life time. Cast iron is "sealed" when all of the pores of the metal are basically "clogged" with baked on grease/oil. A quick way to get a seasoning is just to keep them in the oven every time you bake, repeating the grease/oil coating. Did I already say that?? :D ...I can't remember. Another thing to be careful of is cooking "acid" foods in them because it can remove your seal and make the food taste funny. It's best to use stainless or an enamel coated pan for that. If you are looking at thrift stores around Austin, good luck. You can find them but they price them out almost like new. Mine are 30 years old and I use them almost daily. Heck, there may not even be any cast iron left - could just be baked grease shaped like a pan! :D

We only ended up with a little under 1.5 inches with this last rain.

Italia - Well I bought mums! :D ....as well as a couple of mini pansies.

Thanks! I started selling eggs about a month ago, just to the surrounding area in town, and now I can barely keep enough for us to eat. So I started a facebook page for people to follow. They like seeing the chickens almost as much as I do.

According to reports the Pleasanton area received 4.88 inches. We definitely needed it, though Foghorn seems a little irritated about the whole thing

I don't think my little brahma is going to make it. She hasn't moved all night. When I went to pick her up, she didn't fight me, she was a little cool, so I put her in a container with some shavings and put the heat lamp on her...she won't eat (she would be the one in the middle of the FF pan and have feed all in her pretty feathered feet). I am so sad...I am tempted to just give up on chickens. Something has happened to all of my chicks at around this age.

Sorry about the depressing post..I am feeling kinda blah after seeing her this morning.

I'm in Burleson...don't know how far that is but I have some month old buff laced brahmas if you want to try again

They put chickens out at our local pond! They've been putting muscovies for awhile to control the mosquitoes and geese to protect the ducks and wild ducks have been coming around for years.

Well, this time they have three tiny little game chickens! One little rooster and two tiny hens! Gah, I'm so happy! They were just walking around, scratching and hiding in the trees with the waterfowl and it was brilliant! I hope no one steals them, 'cause they are gorgeous!
