4.5 inch of rain tonight at Pflugerville. There is a water rescue 2 mi. from my house. I turned loose many of my 5 mo. chicken last weekend. So far they slept on the tree. Hope they can swim and survive this weather tonight.

Sigh... I lost 3 of my hatchlings tonight. A possum made his way into the brood box. One of the hatchlings is injured but trying to stay alive. The last one hid behind a screen and the possum couldn't reach it. I washed the injured one in warm water and mild soap. I did notice the possum had drool running down his mouth. What should I do now?

The drooling from the opossum is nothing--it's what they do when frightened. Keep the chick in a hospital cage with extra heat. Don't offer it food but try electolytes. Their gut shuts down when they are shocky from an injury like an animal attack. Giving them food before their gut is working again can kill them. Sorry to hear you lost some chicks. Good luck with the hurt one.

Wow, I am so sorry to hear about your son! I'm glad he is alright! Do you think this bacteria is primarily from outdoor (or indoor/outdoor) cats? Ours are strictly indoors, but I do have one that likes to escape out the back door in order to roll around in the catnip plant on the porch lol.

I don't know if it is only outdoor cats. I assume it is likely most cats, indoor or outdoor. It isn't something I would worry about except that if I get a nick from a claw, I will wash it and put antibiotic ointment on it. I do that because most cat scratches get infected, which I assume is from those bacteria.

We've had a huge amount of rain tonight. So far 10 inches in six hours and lots more to come. The road is flooded. The little dry creek bed is now a 40 foot wide raging white water river washing over the road. I'm really afraid to look at the damage to the soil in the morning. I had a white water river flowing across parts of my property.

I live Pflugerville but my ranch is in Bastrop (35 mi away). There is a retention pond next to the ranch that was dry out for 1-2 yrs. I hope this pond filled up and helped me to stop the possum, coons from getting to my birds.

Good Morning Hungnguyen!!

I hope your pond gets filled. I have seen too many that have dried up. Are you planning on moving to Bastrop anytime soon or is this your retirement place?

You have a GREAT day!

Lisa :)

Lisa Dear:
No need for me to move to Bastrop as all my birds are retired here at my friend's ranch. I have this friend, named Mark, for 20 yrs., I used to work with him. He is deaf so we created a mutual understanding well. Since he has chickens, it is perfect for me to rent a corner and have mine, and he will do the feeding for me. I work very far from home, in San Marcos, but I can always stop at the ranch on my way home; i do this in middle of the week. This way I take care of the birds during the week; allowing me to be free on weekend to .. either visiting the chickens again, or visiting friends .. or working on my soccer referee duty .. or doing some writings, poems for Vietnamese magazines in Houston... or getting on with my movie career (with Robert Rodriguez) ... or visiting my parents in Sugar Land... or visiting Rosenberg ...
or else ...

At this moment, I am working on my retirement ranch in Vietnam where my in-laws reside. Someday, I will invite you to travel there ... to take pictures with my "new hen" and the other chickens.

Have a "horrible" Halloween ... to all .

Why would a pond deter predators?
