Texas

I found a black widow spider in the container I store my hay in. As I was trying to kill it one of my hens jumped up and knocked the lid closed. She did that 2 more times when I opened it. The 4th time I openned it she jumped up and in the container and ate the spider before I could do anything. I didn't know if it would kill her or not. It didn't. Then I thought...should we eat her next few eggs? We did. Nothing happened. My hens love to eat small snakes. I wonder if they eat a rattlesnake if it would kill them or make them ill?
I guess they can handle things that we can't. I kinda freaked out the first time I saw our ducks snag a walking stick (aren't they supposed to be poisonous?). But nothing bad happened to her and in fact the ducks and chickens all gorged themselves on walking sticks all summer long. We had a massive plague of them all year and I was happy they turned out to be good eating for the girls cause those things give me the heebee jeebees.

We have a bantam hen that is notorious for making off with lizards and grass snakes. -went out one afternoon and the entire flock was running after her. She had a snake (twice her size) hanging from her beak - and dashing like mad across the lawn. It was hilarious.

Speaking of the cold weather, it has arrived in North Texas. -thunder, wind, lightning, and cool temps. I actually love the cold weather. -much prefer a cooler climate to the brutal summers we have here.....

I prefer something in between brutally hot and cold. Sunday was perfect! 86*, sunny. Ya, very nice. :)

I probably wouldn't mind the cold so much if I had insulation in my walls and more in the attic and something to block the cold from the crawl space too.

It's a good weekend to hibernate indoors. Just need to make it through Friday first. I thought Wednesday was Friday, then Wednesday afternoon I thought it would be tomorrow (meaning Wednesday was Thursday). When I woke up this morning I thought it was Friday and had trouble remembering that it wasn't Friday all day long. I am sooooo glad tomorrow is finally Friday!

I just had a look see at the reviews of the chicken breeds and was not real impressed with the Delaware. The people that got them from MPC said they were mean, nasty birds. I think I will get a Buckeye instead. They sound great. I'll have to look over the reviews again before I place my order in April.

Our neighbor has a lovely Delaware hen. She is very sweet - a bit vocal (loudest in the flock) - but a super friendly bird. -not mean or nasty at all.

86 - a bit too warm for me. I prefer it to max out at 86 in the summer!! (Unfortunately, it hovers between 100 - 105, here

-really love the climate in CO (front range area). -native Texan, here.......but I think the mountains call for retirement!
