All of my North and Hill Country BYC'rs: Stay warm!!

I put an extra heat lamp in my big coop because it's so airy. I did not put a heat lamp in the covered hoop-coop because the 4 month olds still sleep piled together (I don't have a roost in there) so I think they will be warm enough. Plus they were given suet cake, feed and cracked corn to keep their internal engines going.

It's supposed to be even colder tomorrow night, down around 27 here.

We'll this has been such an interesting day with the death of Mandela and the plunging temps...things like drastic temp changes cause 3rd graders to get whacked out. Ugh! I wonder if playing on Thursday night will help the texans win. I'm not going to hold my breath. On another note, my hens I got Sat (2 Americaunas and a black australorp) are getting along famously and are such fun to watch. Lucy, the original leg horn, got herself over the fence into my neighbors yard. I just had to laugh. She really wanted back over but I guess she forgot she could fly. I ended up taking a plank off the fence to let her prissy self back through.
Hung you are funny!!!
LOL another teacher in my yoga class tonight said the same thing about her kids - that they were like jumpy puppies with the weather. The horse is tucked in his stall with the California weight blanket toasty warm. Perhaps little puffy coats for the chickies too;-)

Today I had to bring the little naked frazzle pullet into the kitchen again. She promptly laid me an egg. Brought the frazzle cockerel into a pen in the garage--too darn cold and windy for his pathetic feathers. Also brought in his buddy the Silkie cockerel to keep him warm and to make sure they keep the cockerel hierarchy stable. This cold is nasty!

It was 40 when I went to bed at 2 am this morning and then at 7 am it was 34. Went to 30* about 2 pm this afternoon, wind chill low 20s - still at 30* now. Chickens are fine with it. They all huddle together even on the roosts when it is chilly. Have a bunch that are in open air pens that have been fine, even when it was this cold at Thanksgiving. We just make sure that they have wind breaks on the north and west sides of the runs and they do fine. Heck, last Christmas we had sideways freezing rain, sleet, and snow mix and it was even blowing into the runs and the chickens were out there like it was nothing. I threw them some grain/sunflower this evening before it got dark since yesterday it was nearly 80* and I have had the freaky TX weather throw some into a molt before by being stressed with the wide temperature shifts.

And of course I am having to push the dogs out the door just to get them to go outside to potty. I'm sure the chickens think the dogs are a bunch of wimps.

I hope the chickens make it okay tonight. Seven of them piled into the smaller chicken tracker coop (it is designed for 4) and Cupcake is left all by herself in the larger coop. She has been acting unsociable towards some of the other hens so they are not letting her roost with them. I guess I will see in the morning.

Take a look at this beauty. Be sure to read about them too. A bit out of my price range though.

A friend sent me this today. :)

the sleet is starting to accumulate now. :( My son is working tonight. He delivers pizza.

I think it is quite an extensive list if you can afford it. Alas, I am a poor, unemployed college student that still lives with her parents. I had to have a huge talk with the parents because I wasn't sure they would support me doing this now.

Grass-fed beef is so expensive, too. I was lucky to find hormone-free, antibiotic-free, cage-free, free-ranged chicken for a decent price (and I went for the thigh instead of the breast because the difference was ridiculous). I don't think I could have afforded beef. The cost was just too expensive to justify. I was lucky to score some wild caught drum that our monger had. I'll have to filler it myself, but it was only $2.98 a pound.

I did get a coupon for $2 off 28oz of organic, unrefined, cold-pressed EV coconut oil. It was $10.99, so it was a decent sale. It cost less than the olive oil I wanted to buy and there was more product.

I love HEB. It is way better than WalMart and they are really bringing in lots of healthy foods. It made this detox thing a little easier to prepare for.
I'll look through it! The lady who designed the detox has a free cookbook online, but it is meant for after the cleanse when you've reintroduced certain foods. Plus, she was a Ford model and had a huge budget. I have to stretch my money and can't afford to pay $45 for 12 lbs of noodles or to buy a Vitamix blender.

It's gonna be hard work. I'm terrified, haha!

Um, have you considered tofu? You can find organic tofu and GMO free at Walmart! Although I am not vegeterian, I pretty much follow a vegeterian diet. I will eat meat about once a month or so. Anyway, it works for me...I once heard a documentary on NPR talking about how our bodies are really not meant to consume meat on a daily basis. It was very enlightening for me and since then I made the switch to a more vegeterian diet.

The avoid list of foods I'm able to eat includes soy, so I have to avoid it for now. Plus, I do like meat. It is one of the proteins I'm able to eat freely. I am eating loads of other proteins, though, so I don't have to make that hefty grass-fed beef purchase. Beans, nuts, that kind of thing, are being added into my diet more readily now. I also filleted a couple black drum yesterday for dinner. While not fun, I appreciate that fish is a good addition to my diet. Now, I just need to invest in better fish (tuna, salmon, etc.) instead of the cheaper stuff. Most wild caught fish is good, but salmon is preferred according to the detox guide.
