Texas

This morning I went out to the big coop and found several chickens in the nest boxes to keep warm, including my maran roo sharing the box with an australorp. I was afraid she was being squished (!)...she is one of my best laying older hens...but she was okay. The 4 month olds were okay out in the hoop-coop, too.

I mixed up some warm oatmeal, cornmeal a few sliced almonds, leftover pumpkin, bacon grease and a touch of molasses to give to the chickens this morning...they are not too interested in it. :(

Their water froze and I (like everyone else) had to go break up the ice to get them watered.

It's still 27 here! ...and even colder tonight.

I hope everyone and everything is okay with y'all this morning. :)

It's just cold Tammy!! I'm very grateful I live as far south as I do. I'm not much of a cold weather person. My daughter sent a pic from baylor of snow she woke up to. For me that's fun for about 15 minutes! The chickens just don't even seem to care. Lol

My bad...if you live on the east coast the football game times are as I posted. If you live in Texas, however, the ou vs osu game started at 11 and they are scoreless. The Baylor game begins at 2:30. My daughter just called and described all the stuff she was wearing to the game. I'm not sure she will even be able to walk.

Newbie question... Here in the Houston area, what kind of slow-down in chicken egg laying is normal over these winter months? I'm seeing a slight reduction, a friend near by is seeing a big reduction, both of us have Ameraucanas?
Hens laying habit is based on day light. So when the days get short, most of them stop. After Dec 21, they slowly get back to laying again. Other conditions causing reduction of eggs are their health, the cage/nest condition and sometimes the eggs got stolen away by coons, rats ...

Hey there and welcome to BYC! Where a outs in the big H are you? I'm in katy and there's not many chicken people I have found close by. I have a leg horn that is almost 7 mos and she's not even begun to lay. I'm guessing she just enjoys being a chicken and shouldn't have to worry her prissy self with mundane things like egg laying. One thing I have learned from all these lovely people on BYC is that every single chicken is different. Stay warm!
