Hens laying habit is based on day light. So when the days get short, most of them stop. After Dec 21, they slowly get back to laying again. Other conditions causing reduction of eggs are their health, the cage/nest condition and sometimes the eggs got stolen away by coons, rats ...

Thanks for the reply! I guess I've been lucky then, seeing only a slight reduction. My three are still averaging 3 out 4 days.

Hey there and welcome to BYC! Where a outs in the big H are you? I'm in katy and there's not many chicken people I have found close by. I have a leg horn that is almost 7 mos and she's not even begun to lay. I'm guessing she just enjoys being a chicken and shouldn't have to worry her prissy self with mundane things like egg laying. One thing I have learned from all these lovely people on BYC is that every single chicken is different. Stay warm!

Thanks for the welcome! I've been around occasionally since I got started on chickens a few months ago. It's been a treat so far. I'm between Houston and Galveston, in the Dickinson area.

So what's your max and what's your list like so far? I started out with a white leg horn cause they are the best layers and a Plymouth barred rock. That was in oct. My PBR died from unknown causes rt before thanksgiving and the next weekend I got 2 americaunas and a black australorp. No eggs yet but the chickens are fun!! 4 is my limit tho

I have 5 on my list and my coop is supposed to be built for 5. Luckily one of the chickens is iffy right now - the Delaware. I've read that the My Pet Chicken Delawares are mean and since that is where mine are coming from I may not get one from there. Enter room for another!

Have you looked at the Cream Legbar's? They are a beautiful muted colored bird that lays green/blue eggs. I like the non-crested type.
