My Fat Bottomed Girls have been outside on the ground and found grass. I'm not sure they've ever been on real ground. Here's pictures I took yesterday afternoon. They aren't good pictures with shadows and late afternoon sun, but they are all I have. The breeder is sending me two more, a blue pullet and a blue cockerel to start my bantam Cochin breeding program.

Yes, that is a foot on the right. I don't know how they can walk with such long foot feathers!



I love the coquettish look this mottled girl gives. And, I love the arch to her neck.

What breeder did you get these girls from? They are gorgeous! I might try and get some fertile eggs from them if one of my hens goes broody in the future.

I bought them from Jamie Matts in Upstate, NY. He's sending me a blue pullet and cockerel to start my breeding blue/black/splash Cochin breeding program as soon as the weather is good. Two fit in one shipping box, so the shipping costs were about the same for one bird or two.

Jamie is judging the big poultry show this weekend in Fort Worth, Fort Worth Stock Show, up in your area. I don't know what days.

He has really nice birds. If you look on the Cochin International's web site, you can see pictures of some of his birds used as examples of the colors. He has a web site, too.

I think I have convinced my husband to take me to the show on sunday that starts at 9~ I am so excited. Do they ever sell birds at the stock shows? I was just wondering. Perhaps I could find two more flock members to fill up my coop. Otherwise I will just be happy to go and look at all of the beautiful birds <3

So with all the talk of gardening and beekeeping yesterday, I figured this might stil kinda be on topic:

Anyone tried aquaponics?
A co-worker was asking about my chicks and then showed me his plans for his set-up.
It's basically...fish and plants helping each other and they grow faster?
I'm not being terrible scientific, but it seemed like a pretty neat idea. A lot of people do it in their backyards and the set up can be as large or small as you want. I'm really thinking about trying it next year: I think it requires more planning and timing than I have time for and I definitely want my chickens established first. But I thought it was neat! lol

I actually have a fish tank with a garden bed on top of it and so far I have grown wheat grass and basil. The basil just sprouted and it seems to be doing well. I put an avocado pit in one of the pots yesterday, so we will see how that goes. I have seen people online grow peppers, potatoes, and many other things this way. So fr it has been working well for me! I bet it would work even better on a large scale such as a pond with koi or goldfish and have the water pumped up into your garden bed and let it trickle back down into the pond? I know the plants I used to water with my 36 gallon tank's water when I had to clean it always perked up after I watered them with the fish poo haha!

My girls already seem too big for their little brooder.(Ignore the box, my daughter wouldn't go to bed until "her chicks" had a bed...lol)
I've heard good things about these:

The diameter is 33", almost 3 feet. Will that be big enough for 6, 7-9 weekers? I want to get something that will last until coop time.

Alright, as much as I love her, Trouble is going to have to go. She needs a home with someone who could free range her more thna I can and has a hen who will put her in her placed! These three new girls are too gentle to tell her who is boss! They keep running and hiding from her and she will not give up on attacking them. When I let them all out in the yard together she will randomly run across the yard to attack them!

She has proceeded to attack the buff brahma enough that now she has freaked and torn her toenail off! I am doctoring her up now. Poor big bird. Does anyone want this lil phoenix hen? She needs a home with someone who has a hen that will not put up with her nonsense. She has a very dominant personality, but she will willingly be picked up by people when she is in a cuddly mood and be pet and hand fed. She lays a medium sized white egg. I get 5-6 eggs a week from her normally. Again, she would probably do well with someone who has a free range flock, or someone with hens that will put her in her place. She is a wild child. Her wings are clipped due to her flying over the fence too often here in the city, but she still jumps up to her four foot perches just fine. Please let me know if anyone wants her. I can't ship, since I honestly don't know how.

Aquaponics is a nice idea but I have shied away from it. With so many areas of the country, particularly TX, being in a drought most of the time, I decided that my time would be better spent working on perfecting gardening techniques that don't require so much water.

Where do you live? I'm going up to Boerne and Lytle this week (to pick up some birds, actually, haha). If you are near there, I can take her. My hens are game-y and won't let anyone push them around. Oh, and my flock is nearly always allowed to free range. The only times they don't are during outdoor events, barbeques, or when Dad mows the lawn.
