No, it's been a good long while since I've seen Sarge around. There seem to be more people leaving BYC - unhappy with some of the policies. I get on other sites to talk to those folks, but never saw anything from Sarge saying that he was leaving and going to a different site.

I've talked to my Dad about setting up something to save rainwater, but it would only be for outdoor use. We've tried to figure out a way to attach our groundwater pump to some of our indoor appliances, but it would never work with the setup we have now. For now, though, I just put all my empty buckets out in the open when it is raining and catch as much as possible. Then I put it in one of my food-safe buckets and use it for the plants that can't be moved from the patio.

I'm tempted to set up an outdoor area just for doing laundry, though. Sure, it would be hard work to use the pump water and hand-wash clothes, but it would certainly be less expensive than using the washer. There are 6 people living in this house currently and the washer is running all weekend and some days throughout the week. Plus, I'd be able to hang up more of our clothes outdoors to dry. It's kind of wonderful seeing clothes hanging outdoors, being blown dry by the wind and sun. It makes me giddy, hehe!

The book I referred to (RAINWATER HARVESTING FOR DRYLANDS AND BEYOND) discusses how to save your grey water (kitchen sink, showers, washing machine) and use it. I haven't read that chapter because I am most interested in keeping the water that falls around the trees I plant by adding berms and terracing.

It is Volume 2, from Water-Harvesting Earthworks. I suspect they have a series, and looking for it by the "Drylands and Beyond" will get you the right volume.

Congrats on the broody hen! And indeed that would be a mighty long drive for her. Perhaps it is better. I wish you were closer, but again I do agree with you.

Whelp, just let me know when you want to come and get my little troublesome hen! Haha. I will pm you my address and phone number. Just let me know what day/time you would like to pick her up!

 

I'll be researching her breed today to make sure we are setting them up for success. Hopefully we can transition her into the flock easily. I'm excited to get her and help out.

Well, it may be colder, but the hens like that it is sunny earlier each day. They beat me out of their coop this morning, a first. ( we don't close up the door, as the coop and run are together with a door around the run.) both were waiting for their morning surprise. Today it was scrambled eggs. I love the way they begin "talking" the moment they hear the back door open.

Also home today with my youngest, 6 year old. The older two, teenagers, have finals this week, so one has no classes and one has only one. I guess it will be a day with the kids.


Hope you all stay warm. No precipitation expected here. But maybe we'll have a fire anyway. I'm so thankful our house had a wood stove.

You don't sound like that at all. Sometimes, some animals just don't work with the group. You are doing the right thing for yourself, your group and her but placing her somewhere were everyone can be more relaxed and happy. It is hard but all part of being a good animal steward

We are going to try and give her a bit more time, since I just found out my husband was not very happy to find out I was looking for a home for her. He is attached. haha.

From the ad it sounds like they are ordering them from someone, could be Ideal.

I was wondering that as well. I think it is Ideal since they have Danish Brown Leghorns. I don't think any other hatcheries I have looked at call their brown leghorns that. What are Ideal's stock like? I had never looked into them that well.

I'm in McKinney, but I can't get chickens this year. I had to pay for a roof. :/ I love the roof though.

The city park around a lake here has Muscovy ducks. I think some are mixed with other ducks. The lake is dumping ground for "Easter ducks". We have an interesting mix of ducks and geese there.

Aw sadness, then again a roof is more important! Can't have a leaky roof~

Since we are only 30 mins or so from there we got our 4 chicks from there. They were all in good health and 1 day old, They only carry certain breeds (all of which can withstand the Texas heat). One thing they told me is that they don't carry white leghorns because they stand out as prey to hawks. So they make sure to be able to start you off on the right foot. Very knowledgeable, helpful and tell it like it is. We ARE going back for more once we set up our quarantine area. She even gives you emailed info to help start you off and tells you to call with any questions. I don't remember if we stated we wanted 4 girls or not BUT we did end up with 1 roo. We got a barred Plymouth Rock, New Hampshire red, speckled Sussex and a silver laced Wyandotte.

They sound awesome. I want to go get some from them, but I might wait and get chicks in spring instead or something, hopefully then they will have more of a variety of what i want, though there blue laced wyandottes right now are very tempting.

I am thinking about doing that for my ladies this morning! They got left over green beans with bacon bits and tater tots last night. They loved them!~ Plus, eggs sound good for breakfast for me too right now haha.

Oh my gosh, I just found Quail Belgian D'Anvers. I want them so bad 8I But you can only buy pairs, and since I am in the city I can't have a rooster. Sadness. I need to find some hatching eggs somewhere maybe, or chickies <3

Morning all ... the temp fell a little now, and a few sprinkle at Kyle now. Gone to be chilly
