Texas

Good afternoon all from Northeast Texas it's 28 degrees here wishing it would warm up. I need to get my coop finished cause I have 36 chicks coming in at the end of April.
Howdy neighbor!

I'm still working on my coop also. I don't have any chicks ordered, I just plan on going to TSC, Atwoods or the local feed stores to pick mine out this time.

Greetings fellow Texans. I live close to Stephenville, west of Ft Worth. Temp says 21 right now and is supposed to get down to around 15 tonight. I'm just chillin with my 10 chicks inside (RIR & BR's). I'll probably get more next month lol. Anyways, hope everyone is staying warm!
It's up to 30 here now. I like our Texas winters, but they aren't usually this cold for so many times!

Just getting started w two hens 1 roo and they get along fine even tho only 2 as they grew up together ! Vertical gardens hydroponics 25 Talapia in an aquaponic setup and 6 ferral cats who are now wanting in the house and to be picked up and follow us around everywhere we go who share time between two homesteads ! Very fine site here
I've learned a lot from BYC. It is a great site. This is a great thread too. Very friendly and lots of info.

Granted i don't have a large flock. Only half dozen hens and 1 rooster, those are the full grown ones anyways. Mostly leghorns. The coop is a simple 4x8. At the moment it's about 18 degrees outside. I have about 10 inches of straw/coastal in the coop through the entire floor. Keeps them warm and they are doing well. Me or my wife goes out there a few times a day to check and replace water in these temps. It was around 13 degrees this morning. If their used to it they will be fine. I haven't ever had a problem so far.

I'm a construction contractor and yeah i agree it has been a cold winter so far. The last few we have had were pretty mild so i knew this year would be a cold year. The good thing though with all this cold weather is hopefully it will knock down all the bugs come garden time this spring and so on.

I hope so! This will be my first year for a garden..I could use that kind of beginner's luck!

I have a 10 x 12 building I am using for my coop and adding on a 16 x 24 run on to it. I am getting 15 Rhode Island red hens and 15 Plymouth rock hens along with 6 dark Cornish roosters to be thined out to leave 2. I ordered them from ideal poultry here in Texas.

Main thing to worry about is the grass hoppers from my experience. A few other bugs like squash bugs and the bug that you don't see (underground) like grubs. Good luck! Last year i did a 20x50ft garden. I'll cut back on the sq footage this year. That's a lot of ground when you work 60-70hrs a week in the summer time lol.

I've heard good things about Ideal. Mine that i just got were from a feed store. RIR and BR's. Both good! I'll get another 10 or so here in a few weeks more than likely lol.

Yes, we are shutdown in New Braunfels. Roads are iced over and people are in ditches. Hoffman Lane is real bad. I slid twice and decided to turn around before I hit the hills. Took the long way to work and 306 and Common Street seem to be okay right now. ShowBarnMom - What breed is your dog? Looks Terrier-ish. I have something similar.
She's an English pointer/grey hound mix. We think. Lol. She's a shelter special :) I had to drive down 2722 today, and hit quite a few patches of ice :/ I work up at the lake, and not a stitch of snow! My house had like 4 ft! (Honest!)

At San Marcos, I saw little round balls of snow/sleet on the ground, everywhere. It's small tiny ball size .. exactly what we saw on a cup cake.

Look like same conditions again tomorrow morning.

Yep - the freaking locust plague pretty much decimated everything again this past year. And when the neighbors cut their hay, all the hoppers just head straight for our garden. Working on some new management techniques to hopefully kill more of the suckers and get a better yield.
