Texas

I was supposed to be tested today, but the weather is just too cold.  He's coming Thursday next week.  Maybe we'll be tested the same day.

Other states don't cull they way they do in Texas--they just put the farm under quarantine and don't let any chickens on or off the property without approval.  They allow you to send birds to slaughter, but dictate the timing and even the route the trucks can go.  Texas just kills every single  bird on your property.

I am new to raising chickens and new to Texas. Do you have to have your flock tested if you are not showing them ?

If you are selling chickens in certain situations you need to have testing done, otherwise if not showing and just keeping your chickens to yourself, no testing is needed.

I'm interested in your stance on worming. Would you share? :)
My stance on worming....that's an open ended question. Not sure what you are looking for. So you know where I'm coming from - I'm a tree hugging RN married to a veterinarian, so my opinions are based on formal education as well as experience and trying to be more "natural" and decrease dependence on some modern "chemicals". Do I have a problem with worming chickens? No. Would I use worming medication if needed? Yes. Wazine works only for some worms though so usually other wormer is needed. However there really isn't much in the way of wormers or other meds that are approved for use in poultry, so anything else like a horse or goat wormer used, would be an "off label" use.

We have not had a worm problem in our flock. We do use raw pumpkin seeds as a natural wormer. Our flock drinks water year round with apple cider vinegar in it, which not only helps to deter some problems by changing the pH of the chickens gut, but also keeps the watering containers from getting the invisible slime so quickly. We also use diatomaceous earth as an external parasite inhibitor and in the feed.

Thank you! What are the certain situations that you need to test any birds you might sell? My thoughts are to sell some chicks that I hatch in an incubator if it is not a big problem to do so.

Hello from Pleasanton Tx. About 30 miles south of San Antonio. This is my stance on winter!

Schools closing already. I just heard that some schools already set the weather make-up date to be Memorial day... poor choice!

How often do you have to be tested?
