Quote: I ordered mine from Meyer as well and had only 1 DOA. I was lucky enough to have mine ship and show up in between ice storms. I deal doesn't have some of the more rare or exotic birds that Meyer, Murray, and some of the others have. I really want some Blue Laced Red Wyandottes but Ideal doesn't sell them. If you are looking for just some standard layers or meat birds then yes, I deal would be...well....ideal.

What's the best breed for east Texas egg laying? Who can I buy from that is reliable to buy chickens Around Tyler? Is shipping safe without the shot?
welcome from north east tx.. what color eggs ? brown , blue-green, or white? how large a flock? do you plan to raise chicks from them ? the best egg layers for the amount of feed will be hy-bred leghorns. they lay white eggs can be flighty and nervous . the best egg layers for brown eggs will be red or black sex links not quite so nervous and flighty a few less eggs for a little more feed. for colored eggs ee's from ideal would serve your purpose well a few less eggs and a little more feed. shipping to you from ideal should not be any problem at all. or the feed stores have started getting some if you want less than 25 that would probably be the way to go unless you plan to show or breed show quality in that case you will need to not buy from a feedstore or hatchery and purchase from a breeder. did you have a breed in mind? hope this helps and these are breed generalizations and not hen specifics. and if you ask 100 people you might get 100 answers . but I find whatever the breed they will lay eggs and I enjoy them very much. :)

Hi, I'm about 20 miles from you near Brownsboro. I have an assortment of breeds and they all do well in the heat. They just need plenty of shade and access to water. I put out a kiddie pool for mine.

Atwoods gets their chicks from Ideal and they get a pretty good assortment of breeds. Tractor supply also get chicks but the assortment is very limited. They will get them in around the end of February sometimes a little earlier. I have had good luck with both places. Call them and check when they are supposed to start getting their shipments.

We call people like you 'enablers' and y'all are dangerous!! I've only got room for 4 chickens and so I'm full. But when you tell us what you wish for then, of course, I investigate and decide I want some too!!! Those are really pretty chickens!

I grew up a lot around there :) Then I move to Dallas and we get all this cold! I'm not used it it lol

This is my problem too..but to be fair, everyone tried to warn me! lol.
My: "Wish" List includes: BLRW, Chocolate Orpington, Swedish Flower Hen....I almost got impulsive..someone is selling white and buff silkie chicks about 20 minutes from me..lol But they're so hard to sex and I don't know how they'd do in the heat..
Ohhhh..I'm dying to get some Swedish Flower Hens as well! They are so purdy'! I'm trying my hardest not to get some Silkie Showgirls...they are so ugly they're cute!!

Just for some eye-candy..here is Prince, my beautiful India Blue peacock.

Good news: My missing quail returned last night.

Bad news: It was promptly captured and killed by Kimchi, one of my rat terrier mutts.

I am a bit sad, but at least I know what happened to it. Otherwise, I probably would have worried about it starving to death or dying from the cold. Plus, Kimchi has always captured and killed small birds (doves being her easiest target). I really should have expected it. She's wanted these quail for awhile but never attempts to get them because I'm around.

Now I need to find replacement quail. Does anyone know anyone from the RGV who sells coturnix quail?
