I have a question for the Ameracauna owners: How good a flyers are they? Will they fly over a 6' fence

We only have one bantam EE right now, she could out run a gold medalist...that being said, she doesn't seem to want to fly. We've clipped all of our girls' wings though, so that could be why. We did have Polish and German Spitzhauben who would still end up on top of high places, even with clipped wings. I had read to clip just one side, it keeps them off balance, we tried both ways with the Polish and German Spitz and nothing seemed to stop them

I don't have true ameracaunas... I have EES but they don't fly. Or at least mine don't.

I'm in the EE group..I have ONE, Pearl, that's my escape artist. She's 5 weeks and flew OUT of her brooder box (2-3 feet deep) and about 3 feet into the kitchen in one fell swoop.
Surprised me while I was making lunch.
Now, I have another "flyer" but she's a Buff Orpington, and only really flutters to the top of the box to perch. Pearl has flown onto the fireplace/mantle to watch tv, the coffee table to chase the cat, and into the kitchen to watch me make lunch. She was also the first to start roosting. lol
She's the chick on the left in my profile picture..lol
She looks a lot different now.

My Ameraucana cockerel easily jumps over my four foot fence, but he's motivated to get to the pullets on the other side. He only jumps fences to get to the girls. They don't seem to be good flyers. Six feet should keep them in. They are fabulous foragers and really sensible about danger, a really good free range bird.

My Ameraucana cockerel won't be jumping too many more fences--he's headed for a pot. I just need to get my new chicks (shipped today) old enough to replace him. I also want chicks from him from my splash Ameraucana. He really nailed me today--I feel like I've been kicked in the shins, hard.

Chickens will 'jump' a six foot fence? Surely they fly, flutter or use their wings in some manner and can't really jump that high.

How will I ever keep them in my yard if I only have a 4 foot tall fence? I don't plan on leaving them out all day unattended. But if they are going to be heading over the fence every time I let them out I may need to rethink this chicken thing.

Not too many chickens can fly, and certainly they don't usually fly very high or very far.

Why do you think they would be jumping over your fence? I've had a chicken leave my property over a four foot fence twice. I found her on the other side of the fence, pacing back and forth trying to come home. Both times it was a Polish (might have been the same Polish). My LF Polish are pretty good at getting a bit of lift.

Birds usually have to be pretty motivated to get over a four foot fence. Either they are chased by something or, in the case of my cockerel, driven to go visit some girls. Sometimes they get over a fence because they are sitting high in a tree. Chickens don't just wander off.

Breed selection. BOs have small wings and heavy bodies so they have a more difficult time jumping, but if they find a hole in the fence they will squeeze through and can rarely find their way back. Limit the number of birds so they have the space required for foraging. Some people simply clip their wings (wing).
