Would bird net work to cover my yard? We have hawks. It's 20 x 30 with some tree cover but I hear the hawks. I only have grown birds right now. Just an idea that's not too costly. Going to add chicken wire to the bottom of the rabbit fence so that any future little ones will be safe. Good suggestion, they are such good escape artists. Magpie

Yes, that would work for avian predators with the caveat that a desperate starving juvenile Coopers is incredibly bold.

Everyone has hawks whether they see them or not. They are everywhere--just because you don't see them doesn't mean you don't have them.

If you hear the hawks, is it it this sound?

I like having this hawk around (Red Shouldered Hawk). It doesn't seem to bother the birds and is very territorial, especially now in breeding season. It complains loudly when other hawks are in the area. We've had a pair nesting on a neighbor's property for the last two years I've been here, but I haven't noticed them so much this year. A Red tailed hawk killed one of my neighbor's chickens (I saw the hawk), so I wonder if that pair are no longer nesting around my house.

Red Tailed hawks make that screeching hawk/eagle cry you always hear in the movies. A Coopers makes another sound altogether. Although I've seen Coopers occasionally, I have yet to recognize their calls. The Red Shouldered hawk is really vocal.

The pair that are nesting in the park by my house are always making noise right now. I love watching them. Hawks and falcons are my favourite birds.

Here is a cookie recipe for everyone. These are incredible! You could tint the glaze green for St. Patrick's Day too.

Lime Coolers

Cookies
2 sticks butter at room temp (1 cup)
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 3/4 cups flour
1/4 cup corn starch
1 tablespoon lime zest
1 teaspoon vanilla

In an electric mixer beat butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add flour, cornstarch, lime zest and vanilla.
Refrigerate 1 hour. (You may need to add a smidgen more flour.)
Preheat oven to 350*.
Shape dough into 1 inch balls and place about 2 inches apart on parchment paper lined baking sheets. Grease the bottom of a glass and press into granulated sugar and gently press glass on dough until cookie is about 1/4 inch thick. Repeat for all cookies, dipping the glass in the sugar each time.
Bake cookies for 9-11 minutes - until lightly browned on the edges. Cool

Glaze
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons fine grated lime zest
4 teaspoons freshly squeezed lime juice

In a small bowl whisk together powdered sugar, lime zest and lime juice until a light glaze forms. Spread on cookies.

Yeah! I was just thinking I should look into getting a dog run. My neighbour kept her chickens in one until she had to give them up due to health reasons - her's, not the chickens.
You have an owl that lives over by you. I know of person over there that has a Yorkie and she won't let him out alone at night for fear the owl will take him.
A bobcat lives on the land at Virginia and Jordan and there are foxes all over the place too.

Lots of raccoons here too. I haven't seen any around here (Historic District) but I'm sure they are here. Finch Park is woodsy enough with a creek to have them. I'm sure they are all over the place. They really like chicken too!

You can run the chicken wire about half way up and that should be fine. You might want something stronger though that won't rip apart so easily - like Rabbit Guard.

You can cover the top with the plastic hardware cloth or shade cloth.
Well look at me, missing all this wildlife! Lol.
I thought I'd seen an owl! I guess I was right.
Virginia and Jordan..is that across 75?
I know I don't have enough chicken wire to do anything substantial, so I'll probably line with something else, like the hardware cloth.

I found the dog run on craigslist! I'm getting 4, 12ft panels, but I think he also had some 10' panels...
He even said he'd deliver and set them up!

I'm so far behind on posts my husband is donating a kidney today so my mind is elsewhere + we've been doing all kinds of jobs to make it easier on me while he's down a min. 2 weeks

Just what I need! More sweets!

I have also seen these hawks. They have lived on our property for years and raised many young. Sadly we found one of them at the bottom of our transformer pole. Guess it got into the wires. Don't know if it's one of the pair or a young bird that hasn't left home yet.. From what I can tell they are red shoulder. I'll go listen to the sound bite. Thanks Magpie

Of course!

I come by my baking desire and ability genetically. My grandpa was a baker by trade. He immigrated here (illinois), as a young man, from Norway way back in 1905. [You would think that I am older because of that. Nope. My mom is the youngest and her oldest sister was 18 years older than her. I am next to the youngest in my family and my oldest sister is 12 years older than I am.] i love hearing about my grandparents (grandma was from Sweden). They both passed away when my mom was 16 and I never got to meet them. I know my grandpa and I would have been great friends and dangerous in the kitchen! :)

My hubby has killed three 'possums just this month. Don't like them...look too much like rats. Also have raccoons as they ate all my watermelons last summer. Had about a dozen icebox about the size of grapefruits. There one night only stems left the next morning. They climbed the fence. Saw prints so know who ate them. I lost two cats last year to what we are pretty sure is a great horned owl. Saw him in the top of a dead pine tree. Chased it off with our blank pistol. That's what you get when living in the country, but wouldn't trade for any place else.

I am so sorry about the loss of your 2 chickens! I am praying for your husband and the recipient of his kidney.

I have two hens that are fighting over the same clutch of eggs. My little catalana has been sitting these eggs since Saturday. When I checked on her today my seabrite hen was on the eggs and had run Belle off the nest. She was so upset. When she trys to go back the seabrite pecks her. I took the seabrite out and let Belle back in the box. Don't know how long that will last. Any suggestions.
