Would bird net work to cover my yard? We have hawks. It's 20 x 30 with some tree cover but I hear the hawks. I only have grown birds right now. Just an idea that's not too costly. Going to add chicken wire to the bottom of the rabbit fence so that any future little ones will be safe. Good suggestion, they are such good escape artists. Magpie
The pair that are nesting in the park by my house are always making noise right now. I love watching them. Hawks and falcons are my favourite birds.Yes, that would work for avian predators with the caveat that a desperate starving juvenile Coopers is incredibly bold.
Everyone has hawks whether they see them or not. They are everywhere--just because you don't see them doesn't mean you don't have them.
If you hear the hawks, is it it this sound?

I like having this hawk around (Red Shouldered Hawk). It doesn't seem to bother the birds and is very territorial, especially now in breeding season. It complains loudly when other hawks are in the area. We've had a pair nesting on a neighbor's property for the last two years I've been here, but I haven't noticed them so much this year. A Red tailed hawk killed one of my neighbor's chickens (I saw the hawk), so I wonder if that pair are no longer nesting around my house.
Red Tailed hawks make that screeching hawk/eagle cry you always hear in the movies. A Coopers makes another sound altogether. Although I've seen Coopers occasionally, I have yet to recognize their calls. The Red Shouldered hawk is really vocal.
Well look at me, missing all this wildlife! Lol.Yeah! I was just thinking I should look into getting a dog run. My neighbour kept her chickens in one until she had to give them up due to health reasons - her's, not the chickens.
You have an owl that lives over by you. I know of person over there that has a Yorkie and she won't let him out alone at night for fear the owl will take him.
A bobcat lives on the land at Virginia and Jordan and there are foxes all over the place too.
Lots of raccoons here too. I haven't seen any around here (Historic District) but I'm sure they are here. Finch Park is woodsy enough with a creek to have them. I'm sure they are all over the place. They really like chicken too!
You can run the chicken wire about half way up and that should be fine. You might want something stronger though that won't rip apart so easily - like Rabbit Guard.
You can cover the top with the plastic hardware cloth or shade cloth.
Good luck to your hubby!!I'm so far behind on posts my husband is donating a kidney today so my mind is elsewhere + we've been doing all kinds of jobs to make it easier on me while he's down a min. 2 weeksSorry about everyones chicken losses we've had 2 chickens get killed 2 nights in a row now & something tried to get another one last night, went out & caught her & put her in a coop for the night ( they were all freeranging AG's) put the live trap out but no luck![]()

Here is a cookie recipe for everyone. These are incredible! You could tint the glaze green for St. Patrick's Day too.
Lime Coolers
Cookies
2 sticks butter at room temp (1 cup)
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 3/4 cups flour
1/4 cup corn starch
1 tablespoon lime zest
1 teaspoon vanilla
In an electric mixer beat butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add flour, cornstarch, lime zest and vanilla.
Refrigerate 1 hour. (You may need to add a smidgen more flour.)
Preheat oven to 350*.
Shape dough into 1 inch balls and place about 2 inches apart on parchment paper lined baking sheets. Grease the bottom of a glass and press into granulated sugar and gently press glass on dough until cookie is about 1/4 inch thick. Repeat for all cookies, dipping the glass in the sugar each time.
Bake cookies for 9-11 minutes - until lightly browned on the edges. Cool
Glaze
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons fine grated lime zest
4 teaspoons freshly squeezed lime juice
In a small bowl whisk together powdered sugar, lime zest and lime juice until a light glaze forms. Spread on cookies.
Of course!Just what I need! More sweets!![]()
