There are several people on here who are nearby - galanie and cockldood. I am in Magnolia.Yeah, back in the day, they didn't much think too hard on naming towns. Whatever was obvious was pretty much what became the name of the town. As for Cut-N-Shoot there are about 3 different stories on how th town was named. I lived here 35 years ago for about 5 years and made full circle and came back about 2.5 years ago, and still don't know the actual story.
I need to move! Oh my goodness! I need to get goats and a whole bunch of chickens.
I had a nice time talking with the the 'Chicken Guy'. I got reassurances on what I was planning to do as a good way to do things and learned that I should keep fake eggs in my nests so that if a snake does get in my coop he will hopefully eat a fake egg. Tony marks his so he knows if one goes missing he knows he has snakes and the snake will also die from eating the fake egg. Good plan.
We talked about good breeds/production - something I had thought about already.![]()
We also talked about what to do when they stop laying. I had thought about this. Just not much. I need to figure out what to do with my hens in 3 years when they stop laying. I cant really keep them since my yard isn't big enough. I know there isn't any way I could eat her either. I'm pretty sure I could sell them for someone else to eat though. I don't know. I guess I will cross that bridge when I get there.
I found out that Azure has a drop ship in my area so I can order better food.
He also told me corn wasn't bad as long as it was non-GMO and organic. I'll have to read up on this more. I thought corn was bad no matter what.
He processes birds that he orders in just for that purpose. It was interesting to talk about that too. He doesn't pluck then, just skins them.
I got to hold a baby goat about half the time I was there too.I need to figure out how to teach goats to bark!
I had a good time and I will go back this fall to learn more about winter gardening from him.
Morning fellow Texans!
Cold, wet and dreary in my part of the world. Had to make a quick trip to town to get some linoleum for my poop board. This cold/wet stuff makes my joints ache. Off to work on my coop. Have a great day everyone!
Today was gloomy. We did do some work in our coop. I have the poop board installed and my brooder. I just need to put down the linoleum, add the brooder doors and wire, put up my roosts and I'm good to go. Hopefully this week we'll have better weather.I worked all day outside yesterday and was looking forward to finishing up today but I woke up to a very miserable gloomy day.
Morning everyone.
Quick question. I just hatched out some adorable bantam ameraucanas. I'm very excited that I got a little lavender/silver coloured one. Unfortunately she doesn't seem to be doing very well. We was partly stuck inside her egg so I did end up assisting her after 24 hours. She is able to stand and cheep and is pretty lively, but it's been nearly two days and she hasn't eaten anything. I have dipped her beak in the water and food, she just doesn't seem interested. She runs around with all the others and isn't droopy, but wont eat. I am worried that she is about to run out of the nutrients from her yolk sac and die. Everyone else has a full crop. Help!
