Texas

I went to TSC yesterday (no chicks yet, it was safe! but non I'd be interested in anyway).
It's not my favorite store but I thought I did see those waterers
Some poor guy there was buying one of those cheapie, too-small coops for his wife. He asked me if I thought it was small and I answered honestly, yes, I thought it was, but then again I have 8 birds.
He goes "Good! I want to limit the amount of birds she can get."
I just laughed and thought "Good luck buddy!"
That's funny. I think I could go to TSC and not come home with chicks. Theirs are straight run and not breeds I want. They can't tell them apart and very few of their employees can sex them.

How far from nature have we come? Does she not eat fresh carrots because they come out of the ground and not a cellophane bag?

My 23-year old son would not eat my fresh eggs because, as he put it, they came out of a chicken's butt. Real live chickens reminded him of that--he didn't have to think of that with store-bought eggs.
My kids are the same way. Youngest (almost 20) is worse. He won't eat anything out of the garden. My older son got past that. I think. He doesn't live at home so I don't try to feed him many meals these days. He did eat my neighbour's fresh eggs though. I think if they had grown up with a garden they would be different.

Check out this brooder. I was reading through the comments and people talked about putting parrot toys in the brooder. I have some of those around here that I can use. They have been sitting for years. A quick wash to get the dust off them and they should be good to go.

Thank you folks for the info on ferrmented feed. Don't have any chicks yet, but will save the info for later. Going to try this on our big birds. We feed layer crumbles, scratch and some fresh veggies as treats. They love the core of sweet peppers. They go crazy for the seeds!.We have twenty birds, would it hurt them to give them a whole head of lettuce and let them have fun with it? When I have stale biscuits we toss a couple of them in the yard and they play keep-away, we call it chicken soccer.

For 20 grown birds a head of lettuce is fine. Some people even run a heavy string through them (and cabbages, broccoli, etc) and hang them up so the chickens can peck at them. Mine have always ignored them but I think it's because they have access to pastures of green grass.

If your chickens don't have access to grass then just go pick a basket full and watch them devour it! I even pick grass and give it to two week old and over chicks with a little chick grit (my chicks are not kept on dirt until they are a month old so they don't have free access to grass) but I DO throw them a bit of dirt from the yard and sand (which I happen to have on hand). We have never had any problems.

My 'new' egg basket came today. I love it. :) I am going to use it for my garden too. It's from the 1950's or so. It reminds me of the fish baskets we used to keep fish in when we went fishing. They hung over the side of the boat in the water to keep the fish alive until you came in.

Open, while carrying. Eggs can't fall out.

Stands up.

Folds flat to store.
