I'll be doing DL, just had a read back through the article I read on it.  Pine shavings.  Straw was for the nesting boxes.  I have read so much on chicken care the last few months it is getting scrambled in my brain!

DL works great here.  I'm going to treat my big run like a compost pile and add all my leaves and some grass clippings (mulching mower) too.  I've read when you do it that way there really isn't any odor and everything breaks down naturally. The chickens love to dig through the stuff too.

Ok I got ya, yea straw for nesting boxes here too. But I SO know what you mean about the info over load. I think I would really like to do the DL also I just need to get my info straight and make some notes. Maybe next week I will be able to do that. I'm just a bit overwhelmed with it all and I'm a got to do it at 100% kind if person. Lol

Next week my hubby will go back to work and be on his 2 week hitch away and I can then sit down and read y'all's post better. But I can already tell there is a lot of info here. I just wish I could round some of y'all up and bring you over and get your advise on my coop. But hopeful I can post pics and get advice. Lol. As for right now my baby's are back in the house and they are HAPPY and my lab is on guard. Not sure if she is beig protective or thinking appetizers! Lol

I just looked closely at your picture--that looks really unsafe! All it takes is a little bump and your heat lamp is in the box causing a house fire! The dog could do it when you are not around or worse, at night when you are sleeping. The dogs looks pretty interested, too. The "rule" for heat lamps is for them to be fixed at two different places, not just with the cord. Please make it more secure! I used two ladders and a pole when I used a heat lamp.

I am getting it from GameandMore on here. They are being ordered from a breeder. It's a black Ameraucana. There is a chance that they are shipped next week and if not it will be in two weeks. I'm hoping for 2 weeks and preparing for next week. If it is in 2 weeks I will wait a week to get the others. I don't have a choice on the last 2. They just won't be here before 6 May. I don't have a choice when the BCM's come. They hatch in three weeks and he will ship them at 1 week of age. Or is it they are coming in 3 weeks? I'll have to check the PM.
I believe he is getting his Ameraucanas from Paul Smith in Gainseville. That's the same breeder all my Ameraucanas came from. He's a very, very good breeder and is the Ameraucana Breeders Club's director for this area. Your chick might be a brother or sister, hopefully sister, to my Ameraucanas. I have 12 Paul Smith chicks that are about 4 weeks old--six black, four blue and two splash--the Velociraptors. When you get this chick, look for holes in the webbing between the three front-facing toes on both feet. Sometimes the toe punch is not centered in the web, and instead just punches the web away. That will tell which breeding pen they are from and I'll check all my birds to see if we share family.

Here's a picture of my crew just after they arrived. Three black in the front, two splash flanking the four blue, three black in the back, all avoiding the camera.

Wow those winds are strong today!! Hope everyone stays warm and doesn't blow away. A couple of the gusts have really rattled my house.

I have bread in the oven. :) I'm making the artisan bread as cardamom bread. The house smells so good! I made Cardamom Chicken last night for supper. I love cardamom! They ought to make sashes out of the fragrance. :p

My husband likes to cycle in to and from work just over 14 miles south down Hwy 281. He had a record-breaking ride in. Silly man thinks he is going to be able to cycle back into the wind.

Don't add the grass clippings. If they eat a lot of it they can impact their crops. There are other reasons and I just can't remember what they are, but my understanding is that grass cut by a power mower is not good.

I am an all in, want it done yesterday kind of girl. I do have patience though. I know, I'm a weird mix.

I will have a look to see. Really hoping they come in 2 weeks so ages aren't so spread out. They are so cute.

30mph headwinds are not fun! I know, I've tried it. I won't ride in anything over 20mph now. It's just too dangerous for me. I get blown all over the road. I should be able to ride the next two days.

I thought mulched grass clippings were ok as long as they aren't too long. I'll not add them to be on the safe side. Makes my job of mowing easier and faster then since I don't have to stop to empty the bag. I will add my leaves though. I know that is ok. Should they be mulched or whole though? I can do both.

I would use pressure-treated pine on anything that touches the ground. Kiln dried on anything that is exposed like run uprights etc.I would also use Hardy Sheating if you can afford it as it never rots.

BTW....Petco has some pretty good looking pre-fabs and this week they have 25% off and free shipping on all internet orders over $49 bucks.

Thanks a ton. That's just exactly NOT what I needed to see. Now instead of chicken math I've got to do living expense math and see if I can afford another coop. Ugh

I can build you a coop that would last a very long time and be 98% predator resistant. The coops that you get at the stores are made in China and will rot within a year. I have seen this firsthand. Here are a couple of coops I built for myself, and have used the same design for some other people.
