I just looked closely at your picture--that looks really unsafe! All it takes is a little bump and your heat lamp is in the box causing a house fire! The dog could do it when you are not around or worse, at night when you are sleeping. The dogs looks pretty interested, too. The "rule" for heat lamps is for them to be fixed at two different places, not just with the cord. Please make it more secure! I used two ladders and a pole when I used a heat lamp.

What you can't see is the interlocking hook that is attached to the light and onto the pole, It can not come off no matter what. The one end of the pole is attached to a ..... well it isn't a ladder but it is a shelf type thing that was build just for this and the other side that you can see also attaches to the other "ladder type shelf". But it had not been moved back in from the barn at the point when this picture was taken. My son was helping me move them back in and get it all set back up. I used the stool and can to go a head and get the lamp up to try get the temp back up as he was trying to take everything down and put back up. It was an ordeal but I'm glad they are back in the house. The temp is just more stable and we can rest better. LOL Now that it is all back in place, it is all very secure and safe. With the people in this family we don't leave anything up for chance. LOL

I was reading the ingredients in the Texas Naturals feeds. They all have DE in them. I'm not sure I want to use this feed now. I know a lot of people say DE is great stuff for prevent all kinds of things, but a lot also say to stay away from it too. I don't want to use something that can irritate my lungs or the chickens lungs.

The food probably won't do that, but I won't use it in the dust bath or coop. I wouldn't use in the coop anyway since I am using the DL method. I'll use wood ash in the dust bath, that will kill any lice. I think we have a bad flea problem here due to all the squirrels. how do you keep those away?

So, I am not sure what to feed now. I can always try the Coyote Creek Farms organic food. I'll have to read what their ingredients are.

What are your thoughts on DE?

I am considering using Organic, Naturally Free Layer Chicken Feed, 25lbs (http://www.amazon.com/Organic-Naturally-Layer-Chicken-25lbs/dp/B0068SP1XE/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t ). Has anyone used this? I'm willing to pay the shipping costs as the closest store is 90 miles away in San Angelo.

Also, do you or can you combine it with this:F.M. Brown's Encore Natural Egg Layer Booster Daily Diet for Pets, 20-Pound (http://www.amazon.com/F-M-Browns-Natural-Booster-20-Pound/dp/B0042FMBEM/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top )

Have a total of 8 chickens - 2 Silkies, 3 Seabrights, 1 Polish, & 2 EE's. Also have 2 dogs!
Our little flock free range during the day and roost in a chicken tractor at night.

Lol excuse me I have been corrected .... My husband said they are called towers and he didn't make them just for this.... They use them at work and he brought me a couple home to use for now! WOW! Illusion shattered! Lol

I believe he is getting his Ameraucanas from Paul Smith in Gainseville. That's the same breeder all my Ameraucanas came from. He's a very, very good breeder and is the Ameraucana Breeders Club's director for this area. Your chick might be a brother or sister, hopefully sister, to my Ameraucanas. I have 12 Paul Smith chicks that are about 4 weeks old--six black, four blue and two splash--the Velociraptors. When you get this chick, look for holes in the webbing between the three front-facing toes on both feet. Sometimes the toe punch is not centered in the web, and instead just punches the web away. That will tell which breeding pen they are from and I'll check all my birds to see if we share family.

Alright y'all. Eggs are on their way. Here is my redneck "Coolerbator" on steroids. Redundant heating and ventilation systems. Can run 110V or off of my solar battery bank at 12V(Can also utilize the 3000 watt inverter off of the solar in a REAL pinch). Temp and humidity look to be getting right. Help me out here. What temp and humidity have y'all had the best luck with in our neck of the woods? Opinions are much appreciated here. Thanks.
