Definitely need lots of ventilation in the metal shed. We are converting a metal shed and adding insulation.

Thanks. Here is where we got to this weekend. Two windows on the front covered in wire with panels that can be screwed back on in the winter to seal them off. It's not shown here, but we did cut a small hole up high in the door for winter ventilation.

Back side has two longer windows and the pop door. We can't really add any more holes on this side as it will be butted up and attached to a pen with only a hole in the wire at the pop door.

The nest boxes are on one short end and the roosts are on the opposite end. I'm thinking maybe of cutting another hole in the lower part of the people door to see if that would bring in some cooler air.

We are adding another roof on top of this one that will extend out farther for a rain block and more shade.

The people door will face NE and there is a large building to the NW that will protect it some from the cold north winds in the winter. I tried to draw it on here a bit. Coop is in red. Yellow outline is of the pen that will be their run. It has two taller sheds in it now, but we might try to bring in some shorter ones for the chickens. (This is one of the goat pens as well.)

Looking good! That metal barn should last a long time. I'm sure I'll be replacing the siding on mine in 8 years or so because of weather. Maybe I'll go galvalume next time around.

Where do you get just a few chicks? I have been looking for a place to order just a small number of chicks and I can't find one. Also, I read that the silkie are not good with heat? Have you had any problem with that?
I know you can order a minimum of 3 bantams from Meyer Hatchery, but I didn't have the best experience with then. Then again it was winter, there was a storm...etc. ( I HAD to order chicks in January

)
But 9 out of my 15 passed, including the 3 bantams I had ordered.
It may be better now that its warmer.
And their customer service was great.
I got mine locally, but it was from a lady who ordered with a friend, then the friend backed out...supposedly...
But who orders 60 Silkies? lol
I've only had them since Valentine's so I haven't been through the summer. But I agree, it gets so hot here, any bird could have a problem.

Have you checked craigslist? Or sometimes facebook wil have a local poultry buy, sell, trade. That's how I rehomed my roo.

Where are you out of again?

I will try to get a picture of her gawking...I was almost embarrassed for her!

I might go visit Family in Houston this weekend.
I haven't been away from my chickens yet! Hubbs will be home (he works) but he leaves at 3pm and doesn't get home until 12:30am....
I'm going to have to figure that one out.

I don't know if you noticed the moon on the door, but this used to be somewhat of an outhouse! There are two of these buildings and many years ago (around 30) they would haul them around the orchards so the hands would have a place to go to the bathroom during the day while they were working. There was still framing for the seats inside that we cut out and I think buckets maybe just went in there. Not sure and I didn't care to ask. :) There was some rust on the bottom but we were able to turn over one panel that had a lot of overlap and replace the others with scrap we had laying around. We got the buildings free.

I have some BR's and RIR's. Three each to be exact (plus more chickies)!

@ Harley ~ How are your turkeys coming along? They were getting big in the last pics you posted.

I got some painting done on my coop. I had to come in and thaw my feet out. That wind is awful! My wind chimes are just a ringing outside.
