Texas

Good day folks...Ordered another book a couple of nights ago...Chick Days. Another addition to my library as I love to read and learn all I can. Hubby is refining our chicken water system. Bigger bucket for one thing. Jury is still out on the little cups. As I was told they do get dirty from dirty beaks, but they flush pretty easily. We may yet go to the nipple type. I really like what Clovisman has done. Really appreciate all the instructions he posted on building the system. We have three 35 gallon barrels that had OJ in them. We got them for emergency water storage for when power goes out...no well. Trying to convince hubby to use one of them instead of 5 gal pail. Anyway got some stuff to do before the rain comes...ugh. Great day to all. Oh yeah, we had another chick hatch yesterday, still waiting on last egg to see if it's gonna hatch. Babies are growing so fast and their new feathers are so pretty! Magpie

What did you say Sister? .. Did you say No Money or Mo' Money? Can't hear you My sponsor called me yesterday. This is a friend of the family who first met us when we came to USA. I haven't heard from him since we last talked 14 months ago when I called him and let him know my dad passed away. Anyway, he called to ask me of how he can buy Vietnames currency, for investment purpose. He informed me that the IMF is about to change the exchange rate to bring the US dollar down and the VN Dong up. Maybe this is their strategy to balance the trade deficit. Anyway he stated that it could happen in April and the exchange rate will change 6 folds. I am not sure how they can make such a big change which may alter everything. Anyway, Lisa, your 1K bill may soon worth something. :)

I chose names for all my chicks. I'm naming them after brands of bikes. :p

Black Copper Marans - Ibis
Cream Legbar - Juliana
Light Sussex - Yetti (stupid humour here)
Black Ameraucana - Ridley
Wheaten Marans - Wilier

Alas our first little hatch didn't make it. Found it yesterday among the hay. But it's ok I wasn't attached yet. I think it was for the best. It was very weak and had all kinds of problems getting around; curled toes, difficulty balancing, also no interest in food even though momma was showing it what to do. After researching I learned that temperature fluctuations during brooding can cause all kinds of problems and it got very cold a few night near the end. I think the air got too cold under the brooder cage and messed up it's development. Hoping this new one does better and may yet get one more chick from Belle's clutch.

This new one came from a pretty small egg. It was nearly white, not brown like my big eggs. About like a large bantam egg, which it could be. I didn't think my big ole roo could successfully "kiss" my little bantams. Will have to wait and see. Stranger things have happened

I was at the Regional Marans meet. My BCM's Cockbird took first place out of two entries, and my BCM Hen took 4th out of 6 entries. There were over 100 Marans in all (multiple color varieties and the Pullets and Cockerel categories are where the bulk of the entries are) Out of 15 entries in the egg contest I was scored 3rd place over all, 2nd & 3rd places out of 6 entries in the BCM variety, and Champion for the people's choice award. I too have a Marans card too and would agree that the eggs were only around #5 +/- at the show and that that the photo of Marans in Oklahoma did not look to be more than a No 5.

Here are the eggs from the hen that won the people's choice when she was at the beginning of her laying cycle 4 months ago. They are #12 on the bottom row they were a 7-8 at the time.

These are not the best photos I could get of the eggs at the Region Marans Meet from two weeks ago. Note: I think I go the people's choice ribbon on the wrong set of eggs, but I like them both. :) I enter a set from each of my breeding lines. The big darker eggs are from the Kostas line and the other set (No. 12 on the middle row in the first photo and the ones with the multi-colored ribbon in the 2nd set of photos) is the Cottage Hill line.

And a few more of my egg photos for education. #6 Marans eggs from my Cottage Hill pen (no they are not always this dark that was at the beginning of the laying cycle)

Drats...I can't find my photos of my #9 egg that I got from the Cottage Hill pen. I will add it on a new post later.

That is great! This is all so very interesting. !!

Hey I read on another thread that they had trouble with freezing with the little cups. Just an FYI

Last night, with fever, I slept for 12 hrs. In my dream, God came and told me that Baylor ran over Wisconsin in their match tonight. After waking up, I was not sure he said .. ran over.. or got ran over... sorry I cannot hear well lately. Good luck tonight Hens.

Hello,
it have been quite a while since I was on BYC. I was real busy but now I am back and have a question for all the Texas gardeners. I am searching for a special native plant for my garden. I googled it already but couldn`t find any place which sell this plants. The name is Agarita (wild currant). It is a shrub with edible Berries. I hope I can find it here in somebodys garden who is willing to sell me seeds, cuttings or a big plant. I attach a picture of the plant too.
