I'm sorry to hear you won't have chicks this year. I still say a trio of Silkies will cost very little and give you a lot of fun.
I'm sure they would, but I just can't afford it. I'm single and don't have a very big income. This year has really hit me hard financially. I need to be very careful how I spend my money right now. Chickens just don't fit into the plan this year now.

Sorry to hear you are facing another setback. I know you were hoping to get some chicks. Hope things work out for you soon and you can get some little ones.

I can totally understand the budget issue. I'm not single but hubby and I are on fixed income. He has a disability that limits what he can do (dislocated collarbone) and since the healthcare deal is such a mess we don't qualiy for nothin'so can't get it fixed. Anyway if we hadn't gotten our chickens given to us we wouldn't have chickens at all.
And since we lost our deer lease to progress we tore down the cabin and brought all the lumber home, and the lady who gave us the chickens gave us the wire so it all worked out. Guess we were meant to have them. Mom helps out...she and dad buy the feed once a month in exchange for all the eggs they want :) It's tough but you'll get through it. Stay the course.

Ms Jellybean, I am so sorry the way things are turning out for you. Don't give up hope and keep on planning. Please stay on the forum. You are good for us!

Lisa :)

Ms.jellybean, here's some cute pictures from this morning to make you feel better. Sometimes sharing a bed with these hogs is enough to make me not sleep.... Haha. You can't see them but there's four Chihuahuas tucked in beside him and our other cat at his feet....

The power company is busy cutting trees off of the power lines. I just took the chicks out to their play pen, at least out there they've got light. Its pitch dark in my house still ... Maybe we will get power back on today. I hope we do, before his family gets here. " Hi, welcome to my home. We have no power, so don't open the fridge or freezer.... Yes the water works... No you can't chase the chickens, Kenny.

At least the dirty floors will go unnoticed if I don't have lights, right?

Lyle is up and crowing up a storm. Had to explain to him over my morning watered down cup of coffee 5 a.m. is not an acceptable time to start growing. He's such a loud, happy rooster!! Blows my mind.

DF quit his job last night. After he heard about me being alone in the storm he asked to leave, they said no, so he turned in his keys and came home... Guess we'll be pinching pennies for a few weeks, I'm about to go back to work anyways.

Kinda freaking out though. We have a mortgage and animals that need feed... What was he thinking? I was fine! *grumbles * men.... Can't live with them, cant live without them.

Love the picture! I can't blame your DF for quitting. What kind of a company is it that doesn't care about the family? I understand your concern and pray he finds another job FAST.

Normally, they just poop and you would hardly ever notice. They poop a lot--many times a day. Maybe separate her for a day and put her on paper towels so you can get an idea of what is going on. Putting another healthy chick separate on paper towels might give you an idea of how normal your problem child is or isn't. Can you send a picture of her stool? Looking at the poop can tell you a lot about health.

Don't mistake urine with diarrhea. Birds poop out three things at once--urine, urates (white) and stool. If they are very hydrated, it the urine might make you think they actually have diarrhea when they don't.

Here's a link to chicken poop. I haven't read it thoroughly, but her stuff tends to be pretty good.

I tried to separate her this morning two different times, two different ways and lets just say it didn't work, how ever I did she her trying to poop again but I didn't intervene so, I went back to check and this way laying by her and a couple of other girls as they were trying to nap. It looks like what comes out when I help her. So I guess she is getting it out on her own during the day, just in the evening I hear her and see it and it worries me. But it does look painful when she is pooping but as long as she is getting it out on her own then I will let sleeping hen lay. LOL

Because of my medical life I guess I am always concerned about poop! LOL Never really thought about it until one of the kids said mom you are always asking about poop. Well, to be honest I have learned you can tell a lot about what is going on with a person by their poop!! LOL

My husband works in Odessa for Shell and he was telling me today that ya'll just some the first measurable rain for 2014! That's crazy!!
We are originally from Marble Falls. We did live in Alaska and Louisiana while my husband was in the military. When he got a job with Chevron and we found out we would be living in Odessa we both just laughed. Texas is home, always will be, but Odessa is not where I would have picked!

We are lucky and our property has a number of pecan trees, I can't imagine living here without trees! I'm not complaining though, he has a great job and at least we are back in Texas!

I would just wet the feed and see how it goes. Check a couple of times a day that the chick doesn't prolapse because of the straining.

I had a prolapase on one of my 5.5 week old chicks because the urates (the white stuff) dried like concrete and it couldn't go back inside . Chick is good this morning and I'll keep an eye on him/her.
