She sounds like a rebellious toddler that doesn't want to get toilet trained and holds until they are about to burst just so they don't have to use the big scary toilet.

Yes she sounds like my daughter when she was a toddler. She would do just that. It beat all I and my mom had ever seen. Being my first child I had no idea and when I told my mom and my grandmother and they witnessed it for themselves.... they were shocked. I mean she would throw a fit on the pot to not poop!! I should have looked ahead to see what our future held with her and that HARD head! LOL

I never knew of such things in animals! Fascinating!!

I got hit with another unexpected huge bill and I just can't get chickens now. Hopefully I can get them next year.

Roosters make a lot of noise, there is no getting around it, even quiet roosters. If you can't have a rooster, just accept it and plan on what to do with him when he grows up. Please don't sell him on Craig's list. There is a big demand for Silkies for their meat--they can sell for about $40 a piece in an Asian grocery store. I've seen enough really horribly botched home slaughter videos to know I would never let any of my birds go to a stranger. If they are going to end up in a pot, it is going to be my pot. I'll make their life a happy and good one and they will have just one bad day, and it really is really only a few seconds. I will try to make their exit as peaceful and stress free as possible. It will make you very thankful for your food and cognizant of the life and death of food animals. I eat a lot less meat since I slaughtered my unwanted cockerels. There are some not nice things about keeping chickens, and culling and slaughter are tops on my list.

When I was first wrestling with what to do with my unwanted cockerels, someone suggested I could just set them free. They would hang around for a few days, I was told, and then magically go away. Please don't do that either. They end up ripped apart by an animals. It is a cruel way to get rid of your unwanted bird.

Girl I am with you on that. I have these birds for eggs and I want to breed and hatch rarer birds in the future. I have a choice right now so I don't have to use them for food. I realize the way the world is right now that sometime in our future I may not have as many choices as I have now. Raising and growing your own food maybe the only choice we have for eating. But eating yardbird just isn't something I can do right now. I KNOW I KNOW... it's all in my head but I never said in my head was a rational and reality kind of place. LOL

Ms.jellybean, here's some cute pictures from this morning to make you feel better. Sometimes sharing a bed with these hogs is enough to make me not sleep.... Haha. You can't see them but there's four Chihuahuas tucked in beside him and our other cat at his feet....

The power company is busy cutting trees off of the power lines. I just took the chicks out to their play pen, at least out there they've got light. Its pitch dark in my house still ... Maybe we will get power back on today. I hope we do, before his family gets here. " Hi, welcome to my home. We have no power, so don't open the fridge or freezer.... Yes the water works... No you can't chase the chickens, Kenny.

At least the dirty floors will go unnoticed if I don't have lights, right?

Lyle is up and crowing up a storm. Had to explain to him over my morning watered down cup of coffee 5 a.m. is not an acceptable time to start growing. He's such a loud, happy rooster!! Blows my mind.

DF quit his job last night. After he heard about me being alone in the storm he asked to leave, they said no, so he turned in his keys and came home... Guess we'll be pinching pennies for a few weeks, I'm about to go back to work anyways.

Kinda freaking out though. We have a mortgage and animals that need feed... What was he thinking? I was fine! *grumbles * men.... Can't live with them, cant live without them.

ewwwww I would be so MAD at my hubby if he did that. We lived in the Houston area for years and I had to ride out several hurricanes by my self, jobs are so hard to come by these days. A company can't have their employees all leaving because their family is at home alone due to a storm. Who would take care of the business. I remember having that talk with my hubby years ago. Sometimes husband think we can't handle stuff on our own, and it is worse when we are pregnant. You seem like a very strong lady, much like I was during my birthing years. I had people all the time get on to me of doing to much. But I would tell them, my grand mother would squat in the field have a baby and keep on picking so surely I can mow my yard and do my yard work. LOL I feel for ya'.
Oh and the proper phrase is... Men... can't live with them, can't kill them and get away with it.... unless you are in the swampy backwoods of select areas in east Texas and parts of Louisiana>> (we need a redneck looking smiley guy to go right here) LOL

I would just wet the feed and see how it goes. Check a couple of times a day that the chick doesn't prolapse because of the straining.

I had a prolapase on one of my 5.5 week old chicks because the urates (the white stuff) dried like concrete and it couldn't go back inside . Chick is good this morning and I'll keep an eye on him/her.

Thank you so much for all you help. You guys on here are so great! I couldn't imagine what I would do with out ya'lls help, support and humor. NOW I have to go check out this craigslist page Harley posted! LOL

So...How many of you are closet Survivalists/Preppers and chickens was just another step in your quest for self-effeciency and sustainability? Well, I have a confession...

I'm not like one of those people you see on TV marching around their neighborhood wearing an NBC suit and carrying an AR-15...besides I don't own an NBC suit.

I'm more like the greenie/homesteader-type that wants to live off-grid as much as possible and have as little Government intrusion as can be had in this day and age. As a free people I believe we are entitled to that. Over the last few years I have being gathering skills and knowledge to basically try to live the way our depression-era relatives lived. I've actually found it hard in that some of the items they used on aregular basis are not readily available without ordering from the internet from nether regions like Nepal. Take washboards for example. One cannot simple walk into Mordor (Walmart), and buy a washboard. (Let me know when you get that pun.

).

The end goal is to be able to grow/produce atleast 80 percent of my families annual intake and be able to trade/barter for the rest. Someone please chime in if they wanna teach me how to use my pressure canner...

Sometimes kids put up a fuss because they are constipated and a bowel movement hurts. The more they hold it in, the worse everything gets.

No, I didn't see the bumble foot surgery. Bumblefoot is caused by bacteria getting into the foot usually from wear on the foot from the wrong sized perches. It can rot the whole foot--bones, tendons and ligaments. It is a big problem with falons. Proper sized perches are the solution. I'm not big on cutting up my birds with no medical training.

Here's a thought for you and one I keep front and foremost in my mind: If you eat meat from a grocery store, you support the practices of commercial farming. The life and death of a chicken raised for meat is really, really awful. It would shock you if you knew the truth of how animals are treated and processed--and no, I am no PETA fan. If I truly love animals (and chickens) I want the animals I eat to have a rich, full and happy life until their one bad day. So, if I really love animals--and I do--I need to get over myself and raise up chickens for meat. I'm not there yet, but it is my goal. So far, I am just processing the cockerels I don't want. Yes, it is disturbing to take a life and there is no one I know who isn't disturbed. I think I might not like myself very much if it didn't bother me and that feeling is echoed by everyone on the BYC thread that targets people like me--city folk who have never been a part of the life and death of a food animal.

I can't believe some of the practices are allowed, but it is because we are so disconnected from our food supply that the commercial farming operations can get away with practices that if the American public knew about, would halt.

I would be a little unhappy with my husband, too. It wouldn't cross his mind, though, so no fear of him throwing away a good job over saving me from a natural disaster, lol! I agree with you about men: You can't live with them and you can't kill them. Did you see "Fried Green Tomatoes"? The secret was in the sauce!

The president of the Silkie club lives in the Fort Worth area. I think that is near you.

Silkies are really hard to tell the sex of for the longest time--even for the serious fancier. Don't even try for a couple of months. If they are exhibition breeding, they are even harder to tell because they have been bred to have big poofy top knots and smaller combs. Just get double the number and plan on slaughtering cockerels.

I'm nowhere near "survivalist" but I do want to make as small a footprint on this planet as I can, and cause the least suffering. So, yes, I am trying to learn how to be self sufficient. I always believed that in any end-of-the-world scenario I would starve to death because I wouldn't be able to kill for food. That's not the case anymore. I can even look at hunting as a more humane way of harvesting meat protein than the horror the farm animals suffer getting to the grocery store. That mind set is almost the complete opposite of what I believed for the first 50 years of my life.
