Found out that hubby's folks are getting 12 guinea chicks in a few weeks. I like them they are great bug eaters and watchbirds. Problem is...they have no place ready to put them. Guess we we'll be scrambling to build a pen and coop. I think he thinks he can just turn them loose and they will take care of themselves. Been trying to get him to come to BYC and learn about keeping them. Oh well, will figure out something I guess. Have I mentioned the men in this family are hard headed?![]()
Well she had a lot of them. ALL colors. They are so cute. We got 3, black, buff and white. My DIL is so excited!Hawkins isn't far from me either..I'm thinking on getting me some silkies too![]()
Chicken for eggs, garden for sure.... I am trying to get us to were we can help our family's out as time goes on. We lost my hubby's dad 2 years ago and we realize the rest of our family isn't getting any younger so the more I can provide to help them out as time goes on the better we will all be. Things just keep getting higher and higher.I guess you could call us survivalists. Yess, chickens are part of it, but only eggs for now. We store extra food for long term, not a truck load but enough for a few weeks, and have barrels to store water. We fish and hunt when we can. I buy on sale, then we freeze and can. Do our best to have a garden and put up the excess. Yes we have guns (no AR) not practical, rifle and shotgun are the goto for us. We live off the beaten path and take care of hubby's parents, plus being on fixed income so we do all we can to survive. Does that qualify?
I think men in general are hard headed! Haha!

I am sure I could make a good bar-bque if I needed to. Maybe some awesome sauce, the whole town will be buzzing about it for days!! Haha!! Some of my friends, and my dad, occasionally call me Idgie. Theythink its funny to mmake fun!
Serious note, just talked to the power company. Looks like we're not going to have power until Thursday or so. Makes me worry a little about the itty bitties I've got growing in the brooders. Guess they'll be okay, safe in numbers anyway. We're past all the cold stuff. Thankfully the neighbor has a built in generator attached to his house, so he and his wife ( both in their 80s ) won't over heat or go hungry. They have electrical everything.
Front fence is on hold now, the official count for felled trees in our property is ten. We've got some cutting to do! Barbed wire to re stretch! Thankfully the dog yard came out in scathed so no free running tiny terrorists to annoy the neighbors. All two of them ( neighbors that is... )
DF and I are in town eating lunch at the local cafe, and I'm mooching power and WiFi because.... Its free!
Take advantage girl. I feel your pain. When Ike came we were without power for 23 days. We live in the sticks so are the last ones to get power back. It was an adventure, driving 40 miles to get fuel for the generator. LOL we were taking showers standing in a tote crate and using a watering can. Thank goodness it was still warm. We were so happy to see the power trucks we took water and coffee out for them at 10 pm just to let them know we were so grateful. Hope you get power back soon and glad you didn't have more damage (We lost 10 huge oak and pine trees from Ike, but had two seasons of firewood.) MagpieI think men in general are hard headed! Haha!

I survive because there is a Walmart within 1 mile of my house. I bet you could order a washboard from Walmart on line!!! And I didn't get the punSo...How many of you are closet Survivalists/Preppers and chickens was just another step in your quest for self-effeciency and sustainability? Well, I have a confession...![]()
I'm not like one of those people you see on TV marching around their neighborhood wearing an NBC suit and carrying an AR-15...besides I don't own an NBC suit.I'm more like the greenie/homesteader-type that wants to live off-grid as much as possible and have as little Government intrusion as can be had in this day and age. As a free people I believe we are entitled to that. Over the last few years I have being gathering skills and knowledge to basically try to live the way our depression-era relatives lived. I've actually found it hard in that some of the items they used on aregular basis are not readily available without ordering from the internet from nether regions like Nepal. Take washboards for example. One cannot simple walk into Mordor (Walmart), and buy a washboard. (Let me know when you get that pun.

The end goal is to be able to grow/produce atleast 80 percent of my families annual intake and be able to trade/barter for the rest. Someone please chime in if they wanna teach me how to use my pressure canner...![]()
