Some people say that their chickens didn't get enough water from using nipples - I haven't seen that with ours. Yes, it does mean that they may have to spend more time drinking than if they were just scooping up water from a bowl, but I don't think it's a bad thing. When there is a lot of pecking/bullying, "they" make recommendations to feed crumbles, so that the birds have to spend more time eating to get the same amount as opposed to just swallowing a pellet. To me, the nipple watering system is the same way. They spend more time actively getting water instead of getting "bored" and harassing other chickens.
So far there hasn't been any "bullying" going on with my flock. I hope it continues to be this way. Thanks for the advice on the crumbles. I have been thinking about getting pellets when it's time to put them on layer, but may just stick with crumbles.

I always appreciate hearing your advice

. Sincerely, lol, thanks!
Unfortunately she didn't make it. None of the others had that issue..its puzzling..but she was much smaller than the others from the start. Nature's course I suppose. I've still got 4 big, healthy active chicks left.
And you really don't want a chicken that's going to have constant health issues..
Sorry she didn't make it. :(

One of my Orpingtons is smaller than the other two. Almost half their size. She eats good, drinks good and does all "normal" chicken stuff. In fact, she was the first one to drink out of the horizontal nipples. It seems like she stopped growing.

When it isn't too warm in the brooder, then the pasty butt ones are often the runty ones that aren't going to do well anyway - as you discovered. Sorry to hear that it didn't make it though. It sucks having to get accustomed to the death of chickens, especially chicks. But it's true, it's better they go than have a frequently ill chicken.

Whew! I am glad I have chickens.
My sweet, loving daughter is showing signs of a bridezilla. Can it be?. Oh my, wedding planning and preparations can be brutal.
:) And they never really are anybody else's problem. They are your babies til you die.

Yuck, I've got 4 girls!! When I went with my 2nd one to find the perfect prom dress it just about was the undoing of our relationship. I told her then, when we finally found it, to just tell me when to show up.

Well, it seems the general opinion is that this Maran is a roo. I've been watching the combs...I thought roos would grow bigger combs sooner. So that is not necessarily an indicator. I guess I'll wait and see what the others look like as they grow. Guess I will have to change his name to George. Either way...they sure are sweet, friendly little birds...not scared at all. I'll try to get a pic of them both, then you can tell me the really bad news...that I have 2 roos!!
