Texas

Hello folks! Just introducing myself....I'm a brand new chicken mom here in Central Texas smack dab in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the "Texas triangle" (formed by Dallas, Houston, San Antonio). Got my girls (after five years of dreaming!) a few weeks ago and they moved into their new coop last night. Can't wait to learn from all you Texas chicken folks. I am concerned about the summer heat so maybe you can advise and the temps go up. Anyway, Hi!

Welcome to the forum!! And Congratulations on getting your girls!....After a very Long wait. There is tons of info on these BYC forums and very helpful advice. Plenty of water and a place for them to get in the shade. Also you may want to search for Fermenting Feed here on BYC.

No clue she came from Atwoods. She has not ever been outside so not sure how she would have gotten anything like mareks disease

I would probably cull her so that there would be no chance of her affecting the others. It is a good thing you have her isolated. It could be that she was helped out of her shell and most don't make it. Or she could have been trampled on by the others. If you do not want to cull and would prefer to try to save it; you might want to try: Sav-a chIck Electrolyte and vitamin supplement and Sav-a-chick Probiotic (from TSC). If after administering for a few days and does not improve; I would cull her.

Not sure about chickens that think they are part goose but with my turkeys I had to put them on the roost a few time a day for 2 days after that they only come down to eat a drink lol

Thanks, I have put the chickens on the roosts during the day. They sometimes stay for a little to look around, then jump down. I tried putting them on the roosts at bedtime, only to find them cuddled up on top of and next to the geese in the morning. While I am very happy that my geese are this tolerant of the chickens, and so hopefully will not attack and try to drown them. I do wish my chickens would act like chickens. the mess in the pen in the morning is insane. If the chickens roosted, cleaning the poop board would be much easier than mucking out the entire pen and having to toss all that bedding.

The younger chicks in our group this year would rather sleep with the ducks, or on top of or in the nesting boxes than on the roost. They are about 3 months old. There is PLENTY of room on the roost and yet they won't stay. I've tried waiting until its really dark in hopes that they won't want to move back to where they were...it hasn't worked yet. I'm hoping that they will eventually want to hang with the big kids.

They love playing on the roost during the day. I do have one hen that is somewhat of a bully and will run them off but if I wait and go out there late enough, she's already settled in.

I have no older birds, to bully my chicks. The 8 week olds are the oldest in my flock, and I judging by their behavior they really do think they are part goose! I will keep trying, they do nap in their nest boxes and get up on top of things during the day. But no interest what so ever in their roosts, and i know they can get up there.
