The Naked Necks make good broodies also from what I read. I like them cause they are ugly like me!! I am also looking at Easter Eggers and Barred Rock but nothing is set in stone yet. I want at this point about 20 hens and 2 Roos!!!

I want EE too. But have to wait.

If I got my genders right, I'll have 18 hens after culling and 2 Roos. Lol

****' y'all type too fast. I am a hunt and pecker.LOL Fitting for this thread, I guess. I am pleading with y'all to help me thru this process. I need to go into this knowin g what I am doing, or it will end in a divorce.LOL My wife says I am spending too much dinero on chickens. The thing is, she is enjoying the 8 eggs a day we are getting from our 8 ladies everyday. (That's an average). I am hoping I find 4 EE's Sunday at Conroe Trade Days. That will make an even dozen, and we can start selling some of the eggs to help with the feed cost.

No hard feelings, not offended! What humidity level do you keep your hatches at for the first 18 days and then 'lockdown'? I'm 100% for trying something different this time since I know something went wrong last time, I just don't know what. The only change I had planned on this time so far was to lay the eggs down for hatching instead of putting them in cartons. I know that a lot of people have success with hatching while in cartons but I'm wondering if mine had a hard time getting into position? If there are any with crazy air cells, since 1/2 of the eggs are shipped eggs, I might leave them standing up.

The sweet spot for me is 45% until lockdown, 65% at lockdown. I have always laid my eggs down and can't really speak for the carton method since I Have never tried it. Remember shipped eggs are notoriously disappointing. I still try though.

That's why I am going to free range with electric poultry netting and do the Fermented Feed!! You save by fermenting the feed as by volume the chickens don't eat as much fermented feed as they do dry feed. As you stated earlier we never break even but fresh eggs and meat birds are better than store bought!!

He is doing ok. We did a yard sale/ donations drive yesterday and raised close to $600.00 for him. It's a start.

Thank you. I'm going to for sure add water and keep the humidity up with this hatch. I appreciate that you said something in time for me to make changes with my current hatch. I had read the information that came with the incubator before I did the first hatch, I should have gone by what it said to do, at least for the first hatch...

I was expecting the shipped eggs to be a failure so I added our own last time. I know the only reason they failed to hatch was due to something on my end because almost all of them developed fully.

I'm also going to try and not candle/handle the eggs as much this time. I really learned a lot last time but now that I feel like I know what I'm looking for, I'm going to try and be more hands off.
